If You Have a DAW, You Know How to Mix. Right?

Well, only if buying a guitar makes you a guitar player . . .

by Craig Anderton

DearMusician.pngMusicians have never before had such a great selection of cool tools at such affordable prices, and this has helped empower those with musical dreams to realize those dreams. But what some people don’t seem to realize is that these tools are, in many ways, instruments in their own right. Back when gear was expensive, a limited number of engineers were able to work

But it's not just that the elevated chatter is a sideshow of bandwidth waste

PreSonus held the second annual PreSonuSphere User’s Conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (nice place, by the way!) on September 28 and  29, 2012. Guitar Effects Are Evolving ... So What's Next?

The paradigm of the fixed-function stompable box is morphing into ... well, what?

by Jon Chappell

Dear_Musician-192-fw.jpgThere’s an old riff regarding Bob Dylan that goes, “Everybody does Dylan’s music better than he does.” If the evidence in support of this statement are the efforts of Peter, Paul & Mary, The Turtles, The Byrds, and Jimi Hendrix, you’d be hard pressed to refute that argument. “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “It Aint’ Me Babe,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” and “

Dear Musician,

We all know the old music business paradigm is gone, but the nagging question has always been what’s going to replace it. Well, we may be starting to see some hints.

Cosimo_ii_deThe concept of artists being able to reach mass audiences is a fairly recent one: the ability to freeze music in time is less than 150 years old. Music was a real-time activity, often performed for, and subsidized by, the wealthy

Dear Musician,

DM_190w.jpgWhen is recycling not a good thing? When it comes to your own creativity, that’s when. To reuse your ideas is not as bad as plagiarism (presenting the work of others as your own), but it’s still “stealing from yourself.” The problem is that most people do it unconsciously. It’s just part of human nature. Behavior scientists tell us that if you write the sentence “Ringo gave George the octopu
