Sure, there's a ton of great gear—but the glue that holds the NAMM show together is the music, and the musicians who make it happen
As this newsletter is being written, it’s 48 hours after the Winter NAMM 2013 show ended—and there are already over 85 videos on our YouTube channel, with a lot more to come.
Sure, we love gear videos; but we also went for more of the human element this time around. Probably nothing symbolizes that better than what happened after the panel discussion on the 30th anniversary of MIDI, when panelists George Duke and Alan Parsons were mingling with the crowd. Public Enemy’s Brian Hardgroove was also there, and had scheduled an interview for Harmony Central with Lenny White, the superb jazz fusion drummer probably best known for his work with Chick Corea’s Return to Forever. Then, in walked bassist extraordinaire Stanley Clarke.
Having also participated in the MIDI panel, I was there too—and I always have a video camera handy. Brian rounded everyone up, then kicked off the kind of informal conversation that could only happen at a NAMM show. And yes, the camera was running.
But that’s not all by any means. JD Deservio of Black Label Society, and several other "musician's musicians," stopped by to chat. We also scheduled an exclusive interview with Eddie Kramer (who engineered for Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and other rock royalty), where he talked with us about not just his signature line of hardware pedals, but also, the upcoming Jimi Hendrix album based on Jimi's very last known studio recordings.
