New York based RoGame Software announces Mozart 2.0 for Mac OS. Version 2.0 supports Mac OS 10.7 (Lion), features a re-written game engine, a revised scoring mechanism, a new training mode, updated graphics, a new soundtrack and many new note characters. Advanced instruments instruments add positioning and non-diatonic notes with all common accidentals including double-sharps and double-flats. Movable and fixed Do solfége styles are supported and all stringed instruments can be custom tuned.
Mozart is an educational game for music students and enthusiasts that brings a bit of fun into reading music. During the game notes stream from the left to the right and have to be identified with one of the 6 provided instruments. The problem is that there are not only notes to deal with, but also all sorts of other entities that may explode, shift places or change the key signatures around for no reason at all. There are two basic instruments where either letters like C, D, E or tone syllables like Do, Re, Mi are assigned. Four advanced input instruments - bass, guitar, mandolin and piano - are also available.
Mozart 2.0 makes a distiction between basic and advanced instruments. Advanced instruments are those based on real instruments like guitar or piano. These instruments now evaluate octaves (i.e. middle c will require a different input than c an octave higher). Additionally instrument positions come into play. The guitar instrument for example will move up to higher positions as the game level increases. Yet another new feature for advanced instruments are accidentals. These are introduced gradually and include all base accidentals as well as double-flats and double-sharps in the higher levels.
Mozart 2.0 is fully compatible with Mac OS 10.7 (Lion), is built on a completely re-written game engine and revised scoring machanism. It provides smoother animation, a background soundtrack and adds localized support for the Mac OS help system. A new Training Mode has been added to enable the practicing of specific positions in the advanced instruments as positions remain static throughout the game in this mode. A 50% speed reduction is available for all instruments in Training Mode.
Other prominent changes include left-handed display choices for the bass, guitar and mandolin instruments, major graphic updates and many new game characters. These include key signature switchers, flyers that pass by other notes, super bombs, super jumpers and more. A new level restart token allows starting a game at a formerly achieved level. When a level restart token is identified correctly a heart shaped icon appears next to the score display with the level number indicated. Additional level tokens acquired in higher levels replace any previous tokens. This feature allows advanced players to keep the game play in the advanced levels of the game.
Mozart makes the task of learning how to read music enjoyable by immersing the student in a well-designed and challenging game. The didactic advantage to this approach is quite considerable for one because the time spent playing a game is not perceived as "study time" by the player. On top of that, however, the game forces players to identify notes very quickly as the animation progresses, a note changes position or the key signature changes in mid-flight. In version 2.0 the average time a player spends completing a game has more than doubled. At the same time the inclusion of accidentals and instrument positioning has broadened the spectrum of what is learned in the game. Anyone involved in learning or teaching an instrument or music in general will find Mozart to be of great value and most importantly - great fun.
