With the education discount, and nixing the modem and super drive you can get the single 1.8 G5 down to $1233. Not a bad price. A little to spend that extra dough on other goodies like extra RAM and whatever.
So, as Jeez said, for regular everyday apps, either machine will do. Now I must disagree that a single cpu 1.8G5 would do better than a dual 1.25 G4 using Logic. In the near future if Apple releases a 64bit version of Logic, then yes I can see this. However, right now, Logic does take advantage of both processors and I am fairly sure a Dual 1.25 G5 will slightly outperform a single 1.8G5.
That said, I would still go for the G5. The difference in performance should not inhibit or increase your productivity and creativity in any substantial way. The G5 will eventually last a lot longer than the G4. It has many more modern feature the G4 does not, i.e. faster RAM, FSB, AGP, PCI, Serial ATA, USB 2. Overall it is a much better machine.
You really may want to get that cup of coffee now that you are thinking about this purchase. I have done this research many times over, offered good advice to about 15 friends now who are quite happy with their new Macs. It comes down to details. No one Mac is the right one for every person. I am sure I could help you decide.
