Best Value Mac Right Now?

Okay - let us suppose - theoretically - that I'm in the market for a replacement for my aging and ailing Powerbook G4 667Mhz.

Let us suppose that I have between $1k and $2k to spend.

What - in your opinion - is the best value? It can be new or used, single or dual processor, G4 or G5.

Here are the requirements:
1GB (or more) RAM
60GB (or more) HD
Superdrive
Relatively Quiet
As fast as I can afford given the above qualifications
Any other features are "gravy" - Airport, Bluetooth, S/PDIF or Optical Audio, good graphics card, etc.

This would be used to run everyday applications (mail, textedit, Quicken, Omniweb, etc.) as well as my primary music application - Logic Audio, which I'd upgrade to version 7.

Discuss and suggest away.

Re: Best Value Mac Right Now?

What I would do is get a used dual G4 or single G5 that has the upgrades. Unless the idea of the new iMac doesn't bother you.

For clarification:

Looking for a tower - not an iMac or Powerbook

Would a single 1.8 G5 perform better than a dual G4? Say if the G4 was a dual 1.25Ghz...

It'd depend on the software you're running.

Oops. For "everyday" applications, speed shouldn't be much of an issue (unless you're doing finances for NEWS corp or something).

For Logic, I'd definitely go for the G5.

The tower appaers to be slightly faster than the iMac.

And the iMac beats the dual G4 in most tasks

The single G5 tower looks good to me coming from a 1GHz powerbook, and G4/400

Add the kit for up to 5 SATA drives and you'll be set.

Re: Best Value Mac Right Now?

With the education discount, and nixing the modem and super drive you can get the single 1.8 G5 down to $1233. Not a bad price. A little to spend that extra dough on other goodies like extra RAM and whatever.

So, as Jeez said, for regular everyday apps, either machine will do. Now I must disagree that a single cpu 1.8G5 would do better than a dual 1.25 G4 using Logic. In the near future if Apple releases a 64bit version of Logic, then yes I can see this. However, right now, Logic does take advantage of both processors and I am fairly sure a Dual 1.25 G5 will slightly outperform a single 1.8G5.

That said, I would still go for the G5. The difference in performance should not inhibit or increase your productivity and creativity in any substantial way. The G5 will eventually last a lot longer than the G4. It has many more modern feature the G4 does not, i.e. faster RAM, FSB, AGP, PCI, Serial ATA, USB 2. Overall it is a much better machine.

You really may want to get that cup of coffee now that you are thinking about this purchase. I have done this research many times over, offered good advice to about 15 friends now who are quite happy with their new Macs. It comes down to details. No one Mac is the right one for every person. I am sure I could help you decide. :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Best Value Mac Right Now?

Okay - I met with lipids last night and he gave me some sound advice.

I think I've decided on the Dual 1.8Ghz G5 at the beginning of the new year. After checking all my lists, I should be able to dump a lot of my old gear and upgrade to the G5, a 17" LCD monitor, new firewire interface and Logic 7 for $1000-1500 net.

Quick question - should I bump the video card from the default (FX5200) to the Radeon 9600XT? This will not be a gaming machine...but maybe a slightly better card would still help?

I don't think so. My feeling is that unless you know you need a better video card, you don't.

Re: Best Value Mac Right Now?

The only reason you'd want to upgrade is if you're planning on playing some graphically intensive games. That would already be a kick ass gaming rig - upgrading the graphics card is overkill, and pointless if you're not running the bleeding edge games.

bleeding-edge: adj. relating to or describing systems, devices or ideas that are so modern that they still being developed.

3DMC, I will agree that unless you plan to game a bit on your machine it may not be worth it. However, if you plan to game at all it may. I would not consider Halo (the first one) bleeding edge. I have the Dual 2Ghz G5 with the Radeon 9600 (64MB) video card. Yes my system is fast, but frankly the card is pretty worthless if you want to turn on shaders and FSAA or any of the cool graphics features in most games that were released years ago. The video becomes quite choppy on my machine when I turn these features on. I have even gone so far as to overclock my card now to squeeze what little more performance form it I can. Video Cards are still the one area in which Apple is seriously lacking. No competition really. I can;t go to the store and buy an Nvidia card for my Mac. I only have the choice for an ATI upgrade. So the real question here is do you want a video card with only 32MB of VRAM or do you want one with 128Mb?

Right on. Buying a video card for a Mac, you feel like you're being screwed. No choice, and they're double in price or more what a PC equivalent is.

I have to get a video card for the girlfriend's PC so she can run a 2nd monitor and I found lots of these...
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1058660&CatId=319

32 MB video cards for next to nothing. That price is Canadian $, so it's about
$45 USD. The Mac equivalent ( Radeon 7000 Mac) is waaaaay more.

I suspect ATI is overcharging us big-time, and there's nothing that we can do about it. I know you can "flash" some PC cards so they'll run in a Mac, but the average buyer cant do that.

Re: Best Value Mac Right Now?

The upgrade to the ATI from the NVidia is only $45 so I'll probably spring for it. Better than having to upgrade at full price later on...
