Hi I am a long time follower of this forum but don't really post. Normally just read for advice really.
I'm off to Cyprus in a weeks time to work in a resort for 9 months and have just been given the tech report from last years sound guy....and it sounds like they don't give a damn about sound and lighting quality to be honest.
I won't list all the details there's just one thing that i'm curious about. They have 4 fixed frequency (between 148 & 170mhz) radio mics that they use every night and all i've read is problems about the mics picking up nearby taxi drivers and the channels clashing with each other. They seem to refuse to spend money on anything as they don't seem to understand anything technical so it's my job to make something out of this pile of rubbish they call equipment.
My question is....is it possible to internally modify a fixed frequency radio mic? I can imagine in principal it would be really hard but i've never looked into it so thought i'd ask on here. Apologies if it's a stupid question but you don't know unless you don't ask and i'm a bit desperate really!

Ok I just found another forum topic about this kind of thing and it does seem near impossible and like you say, just not practical, so I won't attempt it as i'll probably just break it.
Ah well will just have to settle for 9 months of hearing taxi chat through the FOH during shows....

What about buying one for your use (on a legal frequency for the country), or just going wired and forget about wireless. If they don't care, maybe you should alter your expevctations to fit what reality offers?
Changing is not practical, any crystal changes (on a crystal controlled PLL) requires a full RF alignment... if you don't have the knowledge, RF tools or license then it's not very practical.

OTOH, if you can hear the taxis, it's possible that they can hear you as well. You might want to modify your set list, or at least your between song patter to include them. "We'd like to dedicate this next song to Gustav, who is on his way to pick up a fare at the corner of 18th and Broadway. Good luck Gustav, I hear they're big tippers if you compliment the wife."

Haha that would be quite funny. At least we'd be having some fun with a really stupid problem.
It's just a ridiculous situation really but they won't put any money towards the entertainment so there's nothing I can do I just thought i'd see if the idea was possible. I guess i'll just have to get on with it. The amazing thing is the manager will still complain if there's problems and expect you to be able to fix it with what you've got. I know hotel managers rarely have knowledge or even care about technical stuff but there's gotta be a point where it's just ridiculous, and it sounds like this manager is there.

Or maybe you could see if those wireless untils are even legal in that jurisdiction, if they are illegal I'm sure if you presented it in writing they would understand they are in violation of the FCC or state regulations for RF and you don't want to violate any laws now do you?
