Al, for a minute there I thought the space aliens had come and hijacked your account. Glad you're back on Earth safe and sound!

What's great about RCF speakers is that they have voice coils in 'em. That helps prevent extortion or slows down the frequencies so your speakers can catch them, right?  :smileywink:

I have to go watch that Seismic Audio guy's videos again so that people will think I spent millions on my sound system...

"Watts" is really the wrong way to think about power amplifiers.  Power amplifiers do not produce "power" ... they produce "voltage".  Voltage into a load is power, but you should really be thinking about power amplifiers in terms of voltage output.

That said .... it doesn't matter one damn bit how much power or voltage power amps inside power speakers put out.  What matters is how much acoustic energy does the speaker system put out (and how much of that is usable)

I would say the 310As put out sufficient voltage to equate to roughly 350 traditional watts worth of continous program "acoustic energy", but that's just a guess. Most of that acoustic energy is usable, but since the gains on my speakers are set at the halfway point, I'm only using 175 of those watts most of the time. Unfortunately, I often have to use a 6 outlet surge protector in my setup, so only 1/6th of the electricity from my wall is getting to each speaker, making them less loud. This is what pros mean when they talk about power compression. Last week, to make things better, I decided to buy a  "power conditioner" which I am guessing makes the electricity soft and more manageable.

LOL.  What makes this great is that for an uninformed person, it kind of makes sense :smileywink:

So a power conditioner won't reduce static cling either?

Now that you mention it, underpowering is another popular and very misunderstood concept

Underpowering is when you don`t provide enough power to a speaker. Webster's dictionnary goes on to qualify underpowering as the opposite of overpowering, which is usually described as providing too much power to the speaker. OK,OK I know, your brain is just about to explode. I will try to slow it down. Sorry to be throwing all of these detailed and scientific notions your way all at one time, but I promise it does get easier to understand. Here comes an analogy for you (not an anal orgy which is what many men interpret when they read that word too quickly) :

Think of a speaker as a monkey and watts as bananas. Monkeys really love bananas, and want as many as possible at the same time. But if you don`t give them enough - they will eventually throw their feces at you. What may surprise you, is that most experts I've consulted agree that a speaker reacts in exactly the same way. Now, you may be thinking "My underpowered speakers don't throw feces at me" - and that's a not uncommon reaction to my statement, but you would have to agree that your underpowered speakers sound like shit, right? Do you see the connection I'm making in a subtle and intelligent manner? Now that you understand my level of experise in this field, just like the Monkees, I'm guessing you're a believer. Now, overpower those speakers and even "Scatman" will sound good over your system.  :-)

I don't know anymore. That old guy in the youtube video said they do, but he also said he'd teach us how to slow down the frequencies in our speaker wires so that our speakers could catch them, but I really don't think he explained that clearly enough...

I would have thought that the multiple mentions of monkey feces and talk of an anal orgy would have been good indications that my post was not really serious. The actual disclaimer - even more so...   :-)
