Some of us really only want a piano that you can play on stage. Needs great sound, but mostly piano sound.
The weakness of virtually every digital keyboard out there is the pedals.
Why not put a mini computer/audio module into a box with top-quality pedals on the side. Make it look nice. Make it heavy enough to not slide around. Make the computer controllable from an iphone/ipad/ipod. It would take USB or MIDI from the keyboard and do the rest, with balanced 1/4" stereo output.
Whadaya think?
Maybe the same idea with a couple of swell pedals for organists/synthesists. But put it all in one box with a handle.

You mean like this:
(PC in a box running Pianoteq)
Or slightly different idea, look at the brand new Kawaii VPC (virtual piano controller), just add laptop.

Nope. No keyboard. Just the pedals. (nice to see three pedals on a keyboard, though)
My idea is to use whatever keyboard the user wants--like that nice Kawai up there. The pedal box would contain everything you need to take the keyboard MIDI in and send a top-drawer stereo signal out.
It would also house the pedals. Why? Because there is no good three-pedal unit out there and if there was, you'd still need to wire it into your board. And because this gives you a place to put it--under the keyboard--you don't need to find some other place for it. One MIDI or USB cord in from the keys; two audio cables out at floor lever. Very tidy.
It would contain an appropriate computer and audio interface and your choice of software (Pianoteq, Ivory, whatever) and would be controlled by an app on ios and/or andriod.

I see. Sounds like a perfectly good idea, and easy enough to implement from components readily available.
Why haven't you built it already? ![]()

lazy
The point of my very clever idea is for someone else to build this so I can buy it. Preferably for a buck-fiddy. Then I'll complain that it feels cheap and is made by near-slaves in China. Or for what it's worth, then I'll complain because I can't afford it.

Sounds like a plan. Let me know how that goes...

I have already made this device, and it is practically perfect in every way. Thanks for the design tip, Pogo!
I would post photos of this wonderful thing, but alas, I cannot for this is a private studio. I keep separate departments, and the piano department is strictly private and not for public viewing.

Who told you about my poster?? (He's so dreamy, you know. *squeeee!*)
But I can't discuss my equipment further without an NDA. Thank you for your interest.

I understand that your other equipment includes an unkempt bed, socks strewn about the floor, a half-broken chair, and a poster of Mike Martin.

You're right. Using fairly upscale new parts, it would cost around $1k plus whatever you used for a housing. The version below would also be usable as a two-input audio mixer.
1 mac mini @ $600 (useable as your primary computer at home)
1 Focusrite 6 USB @ $250 (useable as your primary audio interface at home)
1 CME GPP-3 three pedal thingy (no longer available and I don't know an equivalent, but I have one anyway)
Pianoteq or Ivory @ $250 or so
screen sharing software for iPhone/iPad/iPod @ $3
_____
Disassemble the CME and re-house it in a box that contains the mini and focusrite. The mini needs no at-the-gig access except for the power cord but it would be handy to have the ports available if convenient. The other two items take their power from the mini's USB. The focusrite would need its ports available for MIDI input and audio out and it would be handy if it could also be slanted up to give access to the front controls. If your keyboard uses USB out, then you'd need to access a USB port (the mini has 4). The CME just needs USB to the mini.
So you'd wind up with a box with three pedals sticking out the front and an array of inputs at the back. Cords would be one USB or midi cable to your keyboard, two balanced outs to your PA, and a power cord at the back. You'd control it from your iPhone.
I have everything but the mac mini and it's coming time to update my computer.
hmmm

Okay, you win. My quote was from the second post to the original Dude (Way, way OT: p120dude) thread. As official custodian of that once-immortal thread, I have special access to its secrets.
The first post was:
Where is Westbrook studio located? I'm curious to tour your facility. I've been told that you have several departments, including a synth department. What instruments are in the synth department? Do you have a website for your studio? What are the rates? Are you looking to hire any engineers/interns?post 4 is from the dUdE himself:
My Studio is not a public studio, so it is not open for people to just come in and record. It is my and my bandmates studio, where there are different areas like a Guitar recording area, Drum recording area, wind instrument recording area, etc. I am in charge of the Synth area. My bandmates and friends are also involved in different departments. It is not a public studio, it is for me, my bandmates, and my friends. Sorry if you thought it was open to the public. Regards, p120dUdEand so the game began
