Well don't get me wrong, it can vary in intensity but I wouldn't say the urge is overwhelming. It's really more subtle then I'm making it seem and it happens only with certain sounds. I'm actually rather fascinated by it and would like to develop it further. However, at present it seems to only work one way because I'm not a terribly experienced sound designer.
I think you are lucky to have these interesting experiences, though you might not feel that way! Can you make it go the other way? Imagine a sound that makes you taste something and then synthesize the sound and have it work?

Alexander Scriabin famously saw colours in pitch and designed a keyboard using his colour scheme which you can see further down the wiki page, also he was batshit. Sometimes I get strong colour impressions in sound but based on timbre rather than pitch, and like the OP says is the case for him, not particularly frequently, just every once in a while a particular sound will have me going OMG that is so f*cking green, or something.
I find the subject really fascinating.
