was wondering which synth would be good to buy for a beginner.
I would like it to be able to make pop/dance sounds similar to those in Of Montreal songs.
However, I would also like it to be able to do some atmospheric stuff akin to Squarepusher and Sawako. I was considering trying to find a Nord Lead 2.0 to use as a standalone synth and also to as a MIDI controller to control some soft synths. Is this a good idea?
Does anyone else have any other suggestions.

Buy or borrow a controller and avail yourself of the many free or cheap softsynths on offer until you can form your own conclusions about what synths are best for you. Once you're armed with that knowledge, picking out the best hardware synth for your needs will be easy.

A friend of mine is offering an Alesis Ion for $400. The reviews I've read make me unsure this will be a great product for me, but it's still tempting me to jump headfirst into synths. Thoughts?
