"Getting" music has nothing to do with whether someone can enjoy music or not. See Aaron Copland's Three Planes of Listening to Music. I understand what they're doing: showing off technical skill and displaying their "voices" as musicians. That doesn't mean I enjoy what I hear.

I use the term "get" as being able to connect and appreciate.

So is that on you or on them? Seems like your lack of ability to appreciate something would be your shortcoming, not the artists.

I freely admit that I don't "get" these bands that play very derivative 4 chord dirges with out of tune guitars that they set their high school poetry and diaries to. Doesn't matter to me if they are cute lesbians or whatever. Just doesn't do anything for me. When they sound like guitar students 4 months on it's just way too distracting. That is on me, though. I just can't appreciate amaturishly executed music that relies on cliche and cutesiness.
