The Self Titled Pelican album kicks ass but it's only 4 songs and kind of short (about 30 minutes). If you like instrumental stoner stuff check out some Karma To Burn (Wild Wonderful Purgatory is a great CD) and some Stinking Lizaveta.

what, does a song have to be verse/chorus form to be good?

You must be tone deaf, Isis songs flow along smooth as shit, and nothing in the songs are random at all.

Re: Isis

Yeah really, Isis is a monolith of flowingness.

I love the Isis. One of my favorite bands. Pelican is great also. My soundcard doesn't work, so I haven't been able to check out Cult of Luna yet. But soon my pretty, I will order you. I will order you indeed.

Y'all should check out the band Mare. Kinda along the same lines as these bands, but with their own take on it. They only have a self-titled EP released so far. But it's nice.
Pleasant dreams, but please don't sleep too long...

Way ahead of you sir. KTB are one of my favorite bands. Did you miss the stoner metal thread that I took part in awhile ago? I think Noodles started it and me and yabba spent the majority of the time talking about aweseom doom/stoner/riff rock bands. And yes, WWP is a great cd. I started off with Almost Heathen, and I'm glad I picked up WWP. I haven't heard the cd with vox though, I don't know if I'd dig it. If I could only find some boots of the shows they did with John Garcia . . . *Creams pants a lot*

And anyone interested in instrumental metal, check out the Fucking Champs. They pwn it up.

Panopticon is my favorite by Isis

Pelican is way better but that's just my personal opinion. Check out the self titled 4 track album and Australasia... the new one hasn't grown on me too much yet.

Another band you might want to check out is Totimoshi. They just played here a couple of weeks ago and I thought some of their stuff souded like Pelican with vocals and a spanish guitar influence.

Re: Isis

Isis is one of my all time fav bands. Pelican is alright, but I dont think they have the songwriting skills Isis have. Some of their songs kinda leave me empty handed.

You guys should check out Red Sparowes. Its one of the guys from Isis and some other dudes. It's not as heavy, but it is definately some great music.

Isis = puts people to sleep faster than recorded ocean sounds on tape

I saw them open for Napalm Death in 2001 and unfortunately I would have to agree. However, the keyboard player had his keyboard on this highly flexible stand so he could sort of headbang while playing, which was fun to watch. :smileyhappy:

Pelican is the shit. But Agalloch is better. If you haven't heard "The Mantle", you have to. Now.

I saw Red Sparrowes opening for Pelican fairly recently and I thought Pelican was great, but red sparrowes kinda left me cold. They were just kinda sloppy and not good; didn't do anything for me.

Their album is the same way, but I really appreciate what could be if they would tighten it up. The recording is terrible, too.
