People that have access to great food/entertainment should be appreciative. If I want to get decent Mexican-ish food I have to drive at least a half hour, and it's always packed because it's one of the only good places around. Instead of being a Polly Persnickety, you should celebrate the fact that you live somewhere with virtually unlimited culinary options.

Somewhat different set of spices/flavors, I guess. And no beans. :idk:

I'm starting to feel like you people think of chili as some kind of Mexican curry. Is that at the root of this rice thing? :smileytongue:oke:

What should we think of it as, if not curry? Soup?

I KNEW IT! THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS IN YOUR MINDS. You see chili and you think "what a nice curry; I think I'll have it with rice." This all makes sense now.

Actually, I'd call curry a stew.

Like gumbo. Which is usually served over rice. I guess I'm not consistent. :smileysurprised:

Re: I like Mexican food, but I don't want to eat it every day...

OK - now we're getting somewhere.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I disagree.

Creation is the scholarly endeavor. Appreciation is armchair quarterbacking.

If you learn to cook well, or brew beer, or paint, or write music - then you have every right to be proud of what you've accomplished. If I just go to a restaurant and order X, that makes me a consumer, nothing more and nothing less. And being a consumer is nothing to be proud of. Everybody on earth is a consumer.

I mean, maybe through cultivating your tastemanship you've found a way to satisfy your senses more thoroughly than somebody else might have. But so what? Should those who are really good at masturbating also be proud of their achievement?

You're totally off base. Scholars don't create - they analyze, appreciate, discuss, etc. Scholars dissect the things that others create. Scholars write books dissecting the works of Herman Melville. They don't write the Moby Dicks and Benito Cerenos.

Food/music/art/film/book critics as well aren't (generally) creators; they're consumers/fans/tastemanshippers. It's sort of hard not to see their appreciation of [insert field] as an accomplishment of sorts.

For a while now. But I know he peeks. He can't help it. Of course, he's putting up a strong front. But he knows I'm right and that he finds me irresistible, so he's "lost" even though he likes to pretend that he is a winner who can "calmer than you" his way out of things.
