Re: 2012-2013 Premier League Predictions Thread

We'll see. For now I'm quietly optimistic as they say.
Solid improvement on last season should be very attainable at least. Doesn't take much.

Re: 2012-2013 Premier League Predictions Thread

A little reminder. Buying an expensive striker doesn't necessarily mean you score more goals.

But, in all seriousness, the reason I don't think Utd will win this season is they still have a gaping hole in central midfield (still way too reliant on Scholes) and mediocre fullbacks and injury prone central backs. Exceptionally good strikeforce obviously, but that's just papering over cracks. City on the other hand are vastly superior in terms of the squad available - and SHOULD win quite comfortably. One should never underestimate old Slur Winenose though.

Robin Van Persie is an excellent player, coming off a career year. But consider the example of Dimitar Berbatov.

They both like to receive the ball at their feet and in space, and they both move and position themselves to support that. Given the choice between racing-and-chasing or dropping a little deeper, both of them will drop back towards midfield to get touches on the ball. Now RVP is a better player than Berbatov - better passer, better finisher. But Berbatov is still a world class striker.

Who barely got a game last year.

Why?

Because Wayne Rooney likes to drop deep to receive the ball, and needs a lot of space to dribble in. Pairing Rooney with Berbatov took away a big chunk of Rooney's game, and the whole Manchester United formation is designed around maximizing Rooney's skills. So for two seasons Berbatov has sat on the bench, while players like Chicharrito and Wellbeck, who can play on the shoulder of the last defender and don't need space to receive the ball, are paired with Rooney.

And much as I love Modric as a player, I don't see how he gets on the field ahead of Xabi or Ozil (see Sahin, Nuri)

Speaking of Sahin...will end up at either Liverpool or Arsenal on a season long loan.
You can guess where I'd prefer him to go.

There's a giant sized hole in Spurs midfield right now ........

Spurs are apparently after Moutinho. They tried to get a deal including Sahin for Modric, but he didn't want to go there.

Also, they're in desperate need of strikers. They only have Defoe and a youngster (Kane) currently.

Adebayor. Although I still think Berbatov is a great fit there.

Adebayor's wages is a huge problem. Levy won't pay that much, and City refuse to pay some of his wages off. Berbatov looks like he's off to Germany, although he would be a good fit for Spurs. They're in proper trouble if they don't get in someone good very soon. I would not want to rely on Defoe for a whole season in 4 tournaments.

Re: 2012-2013 Premier League Predictions Thread

Chelsea's transfers make sense. On paper Torres-Mata-Hazard-Oscar-Martin looks promising. If Lampard can manage to transform himself into a late model Roy Keane and David Luiz figures out how to play defense Chelsea could be quite good.

Wonder how long it will take until Di Matteo gets the sack.
Chelsea's weak link imo, as well as having no right back and Terry/Luiz prone to erratic brain lapses on the pitch occasionally.

Agree about the centre of midfield, but it looks like Fletcher is on his way back, so that's a positive.

I think it'll be a two-horse race between the Manchester clubs again. Honestly can't predict who will make up the rest of the top 4

I'll be happy if Liverpool is a lot closer to the top 4 than last season, which we should be considering our new guys, manager and style of play.
It will be really interesting to see how Arsenal and Spurs deal with the glaring holes in their squads the next 2 weeks.

Also don't expect Newcastle and Everton to repeat that season again, especially Newcastle.

QPR could actually be the surprise this year I think. Hughes has done some sane dealings, and they should end up a lot higher than last season.

DiMatteo lasts the year - decision comes next summer when Guardiola is available. Ivanovic is a very good right back. Only question is whether the team is better with him at center back.

I don't really take much notice of results in August/September. The real business starts after that.
