What is the Point of the Tags Anyway?

So in true Guitar Jam fashion, we took stupid forum features and set to making stupid-forum-features-ade.  In particular, we've been enjoying WACKY TAGS THURSDAY!  But now the tags are disappearing and simple, non-dirty words like "Tongs" (as in "Disrespected w/ Tongs") have been blocked.  So, what gives?  Why not disable this feature if we can't have fun with it.  It's not like we want to tag things.  This isn't Tumblr.

The message tags contain feta, which is not permitted in this community. Please remove this content before sending your post.

If you ban feta only the criminals will have feta.

The tags and 'accepting solutions' are there because it appears that this forum was designed to be a tech support forum which they ported over without much afterthough.

I get that.  But why are they clearing out and banning creative tags used by forumites as a way to at least make this ugly mess of a new forum somewhat fun.  Without the tags, nothing to do but kvetch about the forum being lame.

Re: What is the Point of the Tags Anyway?

It's a good subtle harrassment tool.

"Senators say they fear the N.R.A. and the gun lobby. But I think that fear must be nothing compared to the fear the first graders in Sandy Hook Elementary School felt as their lives ended in a hail of bullets. The fear that those children who survived the massacre must feel every time they remember their teachers stacking them into closets and bathrooms, whispering that they loved them, so that love would be the last thing the students heard if the gunman found them."- Gabrielle Giffords

Re: What is the Point of the Tags Anyway?

Why do some tags disappear and suddenly become not permitted in the community?

I understand that some people are making inappropriate tags and understand why those are deleted but seemingly innocent terms like shampoo are not permitted.

Who decides what is permitted and what is not? Is this person or persons aware of the Swollen Pickle and Super Hard On pedals? I tagged some threads in the effects forum and now those tags have been removed. I just tagged a bunch of Metasonix pedals. Hopefully those tags will remain.

As far as I know, it's not any of the HC mods or administrators who are doing it. Maybe it's Lithium, or the GC folks, but if so, no one has said anything to me.

I can see the questioning for the need for tags on the forum side of things, but tags are not totally useless, and we used them a lot on the old sites - you just didn't see them on the forums. Tags can be useful for articles, user reviews, and searches. They help the system find appropriate and relevant content to return in response to your search querry. Messing around with inappropriate tags potentially is just hurting yourselves in terms of your own search results, so maybe someone (GC / Lithium / HC Admin) is trying to prevent that from happening. If so, I don't know who is doing it. It isn't me. IIRC, I believe I suggested that they weren't needed on the forums, and unless it hurt the search functionality here (which BTW, seems much better than what we had on vB, and it actually works!), I wouldn't care if they went away. IMO, it doesn't make sense to have them and keep messing with the "allowed" words.
