The spammers have found us

[ Edited ]

I thought we were supposed to be just about spam proof on the Lithium system.

But I just found what appears to be commercial spam for jewelry and Viagra starting to crop back up.

People, make sure you report spammers!

More than anyone, you've been the one touting how awesome the spam filter on this atrocity is / will be. Face it... Harmony Central is just a sad shadow of it's former self.

Regardless, good luck with all that. I'm not doing your stupid job for you. You've been white knighting this place since the changeover. It only seems fitting for you to have to eat crow.

It ain't his fault - he's just a "one of us chickens" volunteer and been lied to same as the rest of us.

There's been quite a bit of spam since day one of the switch.  Also, if you look at the "newest members" list on the main page there are always a ton of spammer esque names on it.

Sadly, as a mod, engaging in flame wars is sort of out of bounds. I've honed those skills over nearly 3 decades online, so it's a bit of a waste not to be able to use them.

And, besides, our friend above has a point, I have repeated the rationale for going with Lithium on a number of occasions -- because people were asking why these decisions were made and that was one of the biggest as explained to us mods -- but no one had to explain the burden of spam to us mods, as we'd been dealing with oceans of it that regular users never saw.

Now... with that last firmly in mind, and with the understanding that I can only speak from my own experience, the spam as I've seen it, has been greatly reduced. I mean, basically, I was dealing with multiple queued-up-in-moderation spams every time I checked in. When I could even get the pages to load. (And then trying to delete spammers seemed to lock up the whole system sometimes.)

So, for sure, absolutely, the spam problem as moderators experience it has been hugely reduced.

But any spam is a problem. Sometimes it only takes one link to malware or warez or hardcore porn to trigger Google's content warnings.

That's why, when I noted even a small trend of apparent spammers getting through the filters, it rang alarms in my head. We need to keep the battleship turning in the right direction. Not the wrong one.

a sidebar on the role of mods at HC

[ Edited ]

I think it might be worthwhile to clarify some aspects of the role of mods at HC.

Regular moderators work as unpaid volunteers.

We generally are drawn from the user community. We're given general guidelines and expected to adhere to a general ethos of fairness.

We are, in a sense, neither fish nor fowl.

The mod's primary responsibility is to his forum community, but at times he must juggle being a representative of the rank and file to the owners and admins with being a keeper of (some semblance) of order... even as he tries to give constructive (if not always overly patient) criticism of the redesign process on one hand -- while attemping to explain to community members his understanding of that not always transparent or flexible process, its motivations and its practical constraints -- on the other.

Just sayin'...

Re: a sidebar on the role of mods at HC

Blue,

I think you're doing fine...about as well as can be expected under these trying circumstances.

a) the users will NEVER appreciate the things they do NOT see....the hundreds of spam-account-requests per day that auto-bots fling at a big site like HC...I would guess that 95 % or more get bounced by the Lithium filters. The rest that get in must be coming frompreviously un-perv'd URL's ... until Lithium gets flagged by user's that there is a new spambot.

b) user's do not get their role. You'd think that someone using the site ( free of charge) could pony up a piddlyass 30 seconds of there precious pr0n-time to report spam when they see it. But I guess the privilaged little bitches do complain ... it is in their DNA.

c) the redesign continues to underwhelm me....but then again I expected a more frequent update rate than every 5-7 days. And the lack of communication from those doing the work (Lithum/GC) ... simply astounding.

Hang in... a bunch more shit will surely fall to rest on the shoulders of you and your'n.

No that Phil and some of the others are back from NAMM, I hope some of the load gets lifted from you.
