Crashes Browser

New forum crashes Netscape 7.2. Running Win98 FE, Flash 9.0 r124. Also very slow on IE. This sucks hard. Yes, 15 year old OS, but I find it the worst form of irony that people can look at this on their phones but has problems on a 2 GHz PC. No I'm not updating software at this point, maybe a newer PC in a year or so. Aren't musicians supposed to be poor??? Compatability testing is dead! However, despite many problem sites, I've only seen one other forum ever with this problem.

Also the new format, like 2.0, seems to be trying to look like there's less content more ads.

Re: Crashes Browser

It's also taking 1-2 minutes between loading a page and letting me scroll on IE 6... Seems to me the complainers do NOT have a real problem. Yeah my OS is so old I shouldn't even complain. Maybe if you paid for a fancy new computer you ought to complain about any website where it doesn't give you some suction, I dunno.

Still, I checked the date on Netscape 7.2 and it's 2004, less than 10 years old. Wouldn't COMPETENT software development include making sure it runs on that? It's just a forum not anything complex from the user end.

I work on websites. The reality is, most of the world keeps their browsers up to date (along with the computer and OS) and that means to create a website which caters for outdated browsers, which tends to be hard anyway, is actually addressing a tiny minority of users (which gets tinier the older the technology) which means it's hard to justify the economic expenditure to make the website compatible.

I'm pretty unusual in my profession, in that I tend to keep personal hardware technolgy for a long time, about 6 years (software gets updated of course), and I come in for a bit of ridicule for that occasionally. I'm at the end of that cycle now and my laptop is creaking under the strain of web browsing (with flash, movies, etc), so I accept it's time to update.

I suspect your computer and browser are 8-10 years old and your OS is 14/15 years old. You may have to accept the economic realities and suffer a slow (or broken) web or upgrade.

Yea, I wouldn't criticize any website for no longer supporting software of that age.

Re: Crashes Browser

I would suggest you install some lite version of Linux, along with a more modern browser.

You'll probably find you'll get a bit more usable time out of your old hardware.

Hmm, NOW it's letting me post ... thanks for the comments. I just don't think upgrade is the way for this PC... all my components are old (esp. hard drives) and it's not trivial, I just need to find a way to get a newer box for close to free.

What I don't understand is how a website can crash a browser, ever. It might not work but it should never crash. Is my software c.rapp.y? I suspect it has something to do with Shockwave/Flash. Just seems possible to avoid. Bug reports FWIW ... :catembarrassed: <--WTF.

BTW, no wrap quotes around highlighted text function anymore?

Re: Crashes Browser

I hear you. I have a dual G5 Mac that's still an excellent computer, fast, stable, all that...but when I go to surf the web, I get "update your browser" error messages. Except there are no updated browsers for OS X whatever it is.

But one thing about IE6 - I'm no web expert, but anyone I know who is considers IE6 one of the worst pieces of browser software ever written. It's probably time to try something else.

There are now eight music videos posted on my YouTube channel, including a cover of "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," which joins "Little Pieces", "Black Market Daydreams," and "When the Grid Goes Down" (complete with disturbing video )

Now even Worse

Now I'm getting another bug on forum topic pages ONLY, not threads (tried: Effects and Feedback forums, including later pages). The page displays in full only to yank it away to a page "this content can not be displayed" from IE6. This is one of the most annoying things it could possibly do, and I have seen it before. Most, but possibly not all, pages that do this also crash Netscape, so it may be a Clue.

There is a possibility this is an ad or similar function, I get it intermittently on some pages with rotating ads.

IE6 also all but immobolizes my system, including a while after closing the browser completely, after viewing this site.
