Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion.  Bought it new from the long defunct Capital Music Supply and sold it long ago.  Acquired it mainly because I read an interview with Kurt Cobain and he said that's what he used at the time.  *facepalm*

Or might have been a Dunlop Crybaby wah.  I can't remember for sure.  Bought the wah from a friend for $40.  Still have it and still works like a charm.  Have replaced the pot, power jack, and switch to convert it to true bypass.

Re: Crybaby wah.

trying to think back; wah was such a foreign concept to me at the time. i was totally mesmerized by players like hendrix or even kirk hammett *facepalm* and how they could get that vocal-like quality to their playing. i thought at the time that it was technique. later, when finally introduced to a wah, i was like "ooooh, that's how they do it..."

Boss MT-2 Metal Zone.

Because I wanted one pedal that could do it all, from mild overdrive to over-the-top, bonecrushing distortion.

I bought a DOD Overdrive 250 because it was $19. That was the cheap imitation guitar players bought when they couldn't afford an MXR Distortion+. I still have it 32 years later and it still sounds as harsh and painful now as it did then. I don't understand why people want that pedal and consider it vintage. Just about any overdrive made today blows that 250 out of the water.

Boss CS3 Compression/Sustainer

[ Edited ]

The CS3 was very useful to me as a beginner because I could not control my playing dynamics.

interesting first choice!  did you go searching for a compressor because you knew you lacked control over dynamics, or for some other reason?

i had one of those, but later on after i started to really understand how to use a compressor in my signal chain.

I tried one that a friend owned.  But, yes, I was very aware of my lack of control over the attack of my picking hand.

DanEcho. It was a nice delay actually, just no tap tempo.

Re: what was the first effect pedal you bought?

Carvin distortion pedal. They weren't available for long. Had a good sound, but the quality wasn't great (or maybe I just abused the **bleep** out of it) and I ended up wearing out the footswitch.

That was it till I bought my POD XT Live several years later.
