X2N in a bright guitar?

I've been trying to decide which guitfiddle to put my old X2N in for ages. I have a  cheap-but-nice Yamaha superstrat that's just begging to be turned into a single-pickup shredder sio I'm thinking that. But it has massive high end since I put nice steel saddles on the bridge (plenty bass and mids too). I like plenty of treble but not if it's going to sound harsh.

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

X2N has less highs than most pickups in a high gain amp but when played clean it sounds like a firebird Mini Humbucker.

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

Not so concerned about the clean sound (why would anyone buy an X2N for the clean sound?) but that sounds quite promising

I had one in a dull-sounding Kramer Baretta many years ago and I just cannot remember what it sounds like. Apart from being very hot

Through a High gain amp think Steve Vai Flexible Lp sounded.

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

I'd have to ask if you're trying to find a guitar for the pickup, or a pickup for that guitar, lol.

I might have concerns for the high end in that particular guitar too, but you never know till you try, really. I'm sure you could trade it for something a little 'bigger' sounding, like a Duncan Distortion or DiMarzio Tone Zone.

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

I've been wondering about the Tone Zone. People say it's brilliant when adjusted correctly but I keep hearing that it's "fizzy" on the hi-end which totally turns me on.

I've heard plenty of comparisons between the JB and other competitive pickups and I ALWAYS prefer the JB. It just fit in my ears right. I can't believe I've never bought one. Considering how many people use them and how many people can't appreciate their cutting high mids, there surely must be loads going for cheap used.

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

[ Edited ]

It's funny how when people describe a pickup descriptions vary so much. My take on X2N Tone Zone JB

X2N - Varies a lot with pickup height. Up high it's unusable due to woofing bass. Low it's bright and modern Sounding, can be used for many things, I keep it really low and it's my 2nd favorite pickup.

Tone Zone - To me this pickup sounds like thrash or progressive shred and never anything else due to the way the bass is voiced. It's nice but not totally versatile.

To answer the question about X2N in a bright guitar, I really would not worry about any problems.

JB - the bass is more balanced but it can feel a little lo-fi.

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

Hopefully if I set it quite far from the strings I can get quite a hot tight metal/rock sound.
Anyone know how it sounds in parallel? I had it set up to split years ago but I cannot tolerate hum so I never used it like that

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

Parallel sounded good (this is with the X2N) but I didn't use it that way, I had a duncan distortion in paralell and liked that better.

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

Did it have any single-coil like qualities in parallel or was it more like a lower output humbucker? I can't decide whether I can be bothered to have parallel as an option if it's just gonna sound like a lower powered 'bucker (got plenty of guitars with them in)

Re: X2N in a bright guitar?

I would say no not single coil sound, but it as a usable clean sound.
