One or two really nice ones, which is exaclty what I've done over the last few years. Sold all but two last year in order to buy my dream Suhr (set neck modern) which left me at 3 total... I just put my '96 SRV strat up on ebay in order to buy an Axe FX. I just don't play the strat anymore, since the Suhr covers a lot of the same sonic territory. So now I'm down to my LP Traditional and the Suhr, and two acoustics. There are other guitars I want, of course, but nothing is a realy priority. I'd rather have one or two guitars that inspire me and I can't take my hands off, than a closet full of guitars collecting dust and screaming for fret jobs, new strings, and setups.
I have a decent, if relatively simple, pedalboard and my Dr. Z MAZ 38 has kept me happy for over a decade, so I though the Axe FX would be a nice way to get variety while still being practical.
maybe a topic for another thread, but why is this forum so obsessed with what things cost?
I don't know, human nature? Maybe part of the modern 'consumer' psyche? Even in the "Guitar of the Day" threads I find it weird when people talk more about the cost than the guitar. If it's hot, it's hot. I couldn't really justify buying any of the guitars in those threads, but I still like a lot of them. They're guitars!

that's kind of where i was going with my question. it's comical to me when people shape their opinion on whether or not a guitar pictured on the internet is "hot or not" based on what the pictured guitar costs- particularly when the price isn't even included or mentioned.

Like probably many here, I have BOTH a handful of cheap guitars and some really expensive ones. Hey, gotta have one for each musical style, and a travel guitar, etc...
And what I've found is, the nice guitars get all the playing time because, well, because they're a pleasure to play and make me sound better than I am. For practical purposes, the choice made itself. I have a couple great guitars and a bunch of guitars collecting dust while serving as room decor. But the half-dozen least used guitars together don't have as much trade-in value as one good guitar, so, hey, they look good...

Even Yoda gets GAS?
I think "low-priced", "medium-priced" and "expensive" means different things to different people. I have some nice pieces that, if bought new today, would be in th $1.5-3K range. I consider that mid-range, but also the entry level for a really nice instrument. But, when I grab something to take out, it's usually my modded MIM Strat or my parts Tele and I have less than $1,500 in both of them combined. They sound great, play nice and I don't sweat about making them so vulnerable. So, If I only cared about playing out, a lower-priced instrument or two would make me happy, but I also happen to appreciate and can afford some nicer stuff that makes me happy.

I currently have 1 really nice guitar, an 85 PRS, and three good to medium qualities one. I hate to say it, but I get much more enjoyment out of my medium quality ones than my really nice guitar. With a medium nice guitar, I can leave it out and pick it up to play when ever I want and I can customize to my heart's content without fear of hurting its value.
Give me the medium quality guitars.

but why can't you pick up and play the PRS? it's a guitar. it's meant to be played, man.

I spent years in the 7 or 8 guitars ranging from budget to very nice. I found there were some I just wasn't using and I felt kind of bad about it. I had neglected instruments and they were taking up space in my house. I'm not going all the way down to just two, but I do find myself happier with a smaller collection of 3 electrics (Peavey HP Custom, Parker Fly Classic, Gibson SG Platinum).

I just don't see the explicit relationship between price and enjoyability, sorry. I have a Mustang that would fetch a nice $um on eBay, I really don't like it much. And I have a $140 Squier Affinity Tele that's a pleasure to play.
I *do* understand the practical side of not putitng pricy gear in harm's way. That's kind of Gigging 101. But as to what I'd "rather" have? I'd rather have a shitload of awesome guitars!

I know, I know and I have told myself that before. It does get played every once in awhile, but not as much as it deserves.

Count me in with the 2 nice ones crowd.
The first half of my gigging career, I got by just fine a couple of nice guitars.
I enjoy having choices, especially when recording or starting a new band/project. But honestly, I sound like me, for better or worse, no matter what I play. So I might as well get maximum enjoyment out of a couple of high quality tools.

The majority of the guitars I own are Really nice Guitars I also own some that are nice but inexpensive. 25 that would qualify as really nice and 10 inexpensive. I've had some for 30 +years some just a few . I wish I kept some that have been sold and wish that the ones that have been stolen would someday return to me but that happens. Ive been lucky to have found so many over the years and been able to keep them because they are special to me.
