Yeah Marco, I was sorta refering to your comment but only because of my frustrating experience with the SX.
Furthermore, after going through the nightmare of returning the thing and getting screwed financially on the refund, the experience has left a permenent bad taste in my mouth. OTOH, plenty of guys have bought those things and have loved them.
If I was looking for a beater to keep around the shop, I go to Craigslist and pick up a used Squire and call it a day. There are so many used Squiers being listed right now that I'm sure that with a little effort and searching, a guy could find a good one for peanuts. In fact, I'm keeping my eyes open for a low priced MM or Squier Tele but I can't justify spending much. I need another guitar like I need another hole in the head!
My next project will proably be converting one of the Squier 51's to HB/HB. I love cheap guitars almost as much as I love expensive ones!

Good Point. I think the most confusing thing about Squiers are the simply question of: Which are decent and which are duds?
We all know that the Classic Vibes are solid..... but other than that.... what years? What country of manufactuer? are playable

1-3/4 nut… that’s my predicament. I’ve managed with my 1-11/16 Artcore, but my fat fingertips still make it a challenge.
I googled and searched until I found someone in a thread mentioning Rondo music “wide”, so I got an Agile AS-820, and price not withstanding, it’s a really-nice guitar.
Rhythm guitar/singing is (for now) is just for personal pleasure, at least until I make my big solo debut, haha.
Then I dump the bass and band thing and tell them all to go get screwed!

Why 300? I can think of a # of terrific guitars widely available new for 350 or 400.
That said, my VM JM was $275 brand new and word, that thing is a fine, fine guitar. There were 3 others in the store (Mr. Music, Boston) at the same time, and none of them were worth more than 30 seconds' investigation.
When it comes to cheap guitars, you pick through the pile.

Ok...
This may or may not fit the criteria but...
Three or four years ago I snagged a mint condition Brawley HSS at an aucton for a little over $100. IIRC, they were about $250 new.
Its a beautiful instrument. Wideish, EJ-like, superfast neck, big frets, flawless finish, all Wilkerson hardware... It's actually a nicer/better built guitar than my EJ Strat, at 1/15th the price.
Mine will be getting new pups but that's the weakest aspect of the instrument and the axe is nice enough that I'm more than willing to save up my pennies for the pick-up swap.
OTOH, its much too much guitar for a kid but if you're looking for terrific value and aren't into the headstock thing, keep your eyes out for a Brawley. Sometimes they show up on Ebay for cheap. ($150 to $200) Me? I'm looking for another one. Don't need one but I sure want one!
(Geeze... I don't even know whay I'm letting this out of the bag. These are major league sleepers. )
Lets see if I can post a photo or two...

Washburn WI64D - lightweight, sounds good, Buzz Feiten Tuning System - $199 new.
DeArmond JetStar - heavy, but I like the GoldTone pickups - $169 new n the Save The Music promotion a few years back.
Danelectro Hodad - four lipstick pickups arranged as two humbuckers - $99 new as a closeout, I also bought a Hodad bass for the same price.

under $300? - in Australia it's pretty hard to come across a decent guitar under $300

Hmm... I've got a few that fit into the criteria. HOWEVER, they were all on sale/ closeout for a good bit less than their normal retail prices, fwiw.
MIK Washburn WV40 'Vindicator' - Phenolic fretboard, Buzz Feiten tuning, name-brand pickups & hardware: got it for under $200:
Kramer 'NightRider' (also MIK) - ~$220:
First Act Sheena CE240 - under $100 (though I think that normal retail price was around $300):

Years ago I bought a Korean-made Squier Tele for $150, with a gig bag. It had no finish and lousy pickups, and the body is one of those plastic/wood/plastic, foto-flame jobs that has no business sounding good at all. The thing is, the neck has the best feel of nay guitar I have ever played (the lilst includes a number of Hamers, and a 61 SG/LP that was quite spectacular). It has aftermarket tuners and bridge, and I found pups that sounded good. It has been my #1 for a number of years now and has spoiled me in so many ways.

Keep them coming guys...pics are a plus.

hmmm...toss up between an ESP LTD superstrat, don't remember the model , a Jackson Dinky superstrat, an Ibanez S of some kind and maybe a Epi LP Studio that sounded and played really good...

My Jagmaster is amazing...absolutely love the neck on it...nicely weighted, and the stock Duncan Designed pups are not bad, either! $299 new...

I have a Jay Turser Les Paul goldtop-copy that I really like. Of course, it doesn't compare to my Gibson Les Paul as far as quality, but there is something about it that makes me enjoy playing it more that I expected to when I bought it as a backup/beater guitar. It was fine in stock condition but I eventually upgraded it with some pickups I had laying around from other guitars (Duncan Jazz/neck & Gibson 500T/bridge), also Sperzel locking tuners. I especially like how lightweight it is.

Picked one of these up for $258 last year.
I changed the knobs and put Grovers on it. One day I'll put '57 Classics in it.

And probably my best deal in 2012 was this for $280.
It was a MF 150% price match, where I got a $270 electronic gift code as a result. So, $280 out of pocket but I got $270 in gear for free.
