Who says shred guitarists influenced by EVH cant/dont have soul? Who gets to determine whether a player is soulful or not? Music is subjective, we are all gonna have different ideas re: what is good or bad or mindless wanking or technical brilliance.

If another flamethread re: who is good/not is how to shake things up i say stop shaking ffs.

Well, I'm sure some do.  Point being though, too many non-feel shredders were born from EVH.  Eddie, IMO, influenced a generation concerned more about speed and technique rather than feel and melody.

No soul?  I don't agree with that at all.  EYngwie's "Rising Force" is a very passionate, soulful album.  I'm sorry if you can't hear it, but it's there.  He squeezes notes out.  Vai has some wacky stuff, but he also has some really soulful ballads.  Sure, there are lots of "bad" shredders - for lack of a better word - but there are also bad blues players, bad country players, bad rock players, bad jazz players...  Lots of people complain about "white" blues guys or guys "just playing a bunch of pentatonic licks," but it's really just people who aren't that good at the genre.

Not everyone has to like every genre, that's personal taste, but the whole "music XYZ has soul" doesn't make much sense to me.  People who are really great at what they do - regardless of genre - are passionate about it.

Unfortunately, accuracy and speed leads a non-player to think someone has the shit, when in fact, their shit usually stinks.  Lots of shredders have feel and soul but for the most part, are merely technically sound and as a result, recognized as players when in fact they play like a computer.  IMO of course.

Re: We need to shake things up around here

There are only 3 Rock guitar players who changed our perception of the instrument.

1. Chuck Berry - He invented how we play rock guitar. everyone still uses his licks and that rhythm boogie style he uses

2. Jimi Hendrix - He took feedback to infinity and beyond

3. Eddie Van Halen - There's guitar before EVH and then after. First time people heard eruption/You really got me there was an incredible WOW factor

Jimi Hendrix, though, is the greatest rock guitarist ever

Nice try but there are countless rock guitarists that changed our perception of the instrument...here are a few more in no particular order:

Buddy Holly

Jerry Garcia

Carlos Santana

Eddie Cochran

Jimmy Page

Yngwie Malmsteen

Andy Summers

Frank Zappa

Kirk Hammett

George Harrison

Link Wray

Steve Vai

Joe Satriani :smileywink:

No only the three I mentioned.

Many of the guitarist you list are great and made great contributions to rock guitar playing but not like:

Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen.

Again, as I wrote they changed our "perception"

Re: We need to shake things up around here

We'll have to agree to disagree...I agree with you that Berry, Hendrix and EVH are probably the BIG 3, but IMO every decent guitarist that does something new and innovative changes our perception of the instrument.

Calling him a "rock" guitarist may be a stretch, but Robert Johnson(the bluesman from the 30's) was a more important innovator than the big 3 mentioned above-at least according to Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray and a whole slew of other people...

Greatness begats more greatness.

How's this; When you get SERIOUS about your guitar playing and really want to express yourself with nuance and soul, ditch your cheap copies, save up and buy a Gibson, Fender or PRS. Otherwise you're not serious or just kidding yourself.

Re: We need to shake things up around here

A lot of you people, opie includes, seem to be drunk. If Eddie never tapped a more in his life, he would still be one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Anytime I hear people comment on him being a glorified tap artist, one trick pony, all that tells me is that the critic never really listened to him and is only parroting what other narrow minded stooges have blabber forth. To say Eddie has no soul, or no style etc, is just stupid. Sure there may be some sloppy live clips here or there of his playing, but the food has led a rough life and had no concept of playing a sober gig till about a year or two ago. But every single note of every single riff, solo, song, record, he has ever played on, has been played with soul, feel and style oozing out of every pore, whether you like the song, or the band or not.

In my opinion, the tapping part of Eddies playing is the ONLY part of his playing that is over rated. As cool as it was when we first heard it, nobody had done it anywhere near that cool or Badass till Eddie, that is such a small piece of his overall wealth of greatness, if you completely took away any history of tapping, he would still be one of the baddest baddasses that ever played a guitar. Nobody has had as long a history as him of playing every single more with feel, and style.

These people that say all he is is a glorified Tapper are insignificant idiots trying to say something interesting so that someone might pay attention to them and give them some little crumb of validation for existing, but it is obvious they know not of which they spew. Ljoke the art critics through the ages that can't recognize the difference between a masterpiece and a child drawn stick figure with crayons, and couldn't draw a straight line themselves, there will always be toolbars out there trying to convince millions and millions of people that have acknowledged greatness in someone why they are wrong.
