I've said this before but only because it's true. EVH is merely a glorified tap guitarist who unfortunately influenced and gave birth to a generation of shred guitarists who have no soul. Machine gun guitar? No thanks.

So you're saying that you can play better?

Someone's playing ablility has nothing to do with whether a criticism is valid or not. I agree with billybilly - shred isn't my thing. I don't like listening to it, and I have no interest listening to it, or playing it, because it's focused on technical ability, and I think music should be based on personal expression, not how good someone is.

I've noticed that people really like to put words in my mouth on this forum. Try again... ![]()

I don't think he said that.
I think he said that as a result of the stuff EVH played there is a whole generation of shred guitarists who have no soul.
I must say that I agree with that part.
It was difficult for me (playing in a house/warmup band) during the '80s when all the feature bands that came to the club had watered down versions of EVH on lead guitar. I grew so sick of the style that it wasn't until I saw Eddie on SNL one night that I realized he was actually a good guitarist and had something to offer.

I don't hate Eddie, in fact I love his tone, on this forum and in general though, I find he is very overrated. This is my opinion obviously, however true it may be..

This point is relevent to what I said. Eddie did what he did and did it well (albeit overrated). Unfortunately, it did give rise to a generation of wannabes who value speed and technique over feel, hence machine gun shredders with no soul.

Hey, I know that man. Gardos wanted to spice things up a bit so I volunteered myself.

Randy Moss is better than Jerry Rice. Hell T.O. is better than Jerry Rice.

No soul? I don't agree with that at all. EYngwie's "Rising Force" is a very passionate, soulful album. I'm sorry if you can't hear it, but it's there. He squeezes notes out. Vai has some wacky stuff, but he also has some really soulful ballads. Sure, there are lots of "bad" shredders - for lack of a better word - but there are also bad blues players, bad country players, bad rock players, bad jazz players... Lots of people complain about "white" blues guys or guys "just playing a bunch of pentatonic licks," but it's really just people who aren't that good at the genre.
Not everyone has to like every genre, that's personal taste, but the whole "music XYZ has soul" doesn't make much sense to me. People who are really great at what they do - regardless of genre - are passionate about it.

I don't see that at all. EVH is one of the best rock rhythm guitarists ever, imho. He's got the groove like nobody's business, and he writes killer riffs.

Like it or not, brand name (Gibson, Fender, PRS, Martin, etc.) matters.
