OT - The Grammys - Who was hot, and who was not?

I was impressed by most of the performers - I was floored by the lighting effects for Carrie Underwood's performance of "Two Black Cadillacs"!

The one performance (and artist) that fell flat for me was Frank Ocean... who? I'd never heard of him before last night's show. He looked scared sh!tless during his performance, which IMHO was the lamest performance of the evening. They should have given him the hook...

I enjoyed Bruno Mars, but Jack White looked almost like he was trying to channel Elvis, while not making too much sense musically.

Fun was, well, fun!

How about you? Who'd you like, and who didn't do it for you?

Re: OT - The Grammys - Who was hot, and who was not?

I thought Taylor Swift was silly, Rihanna was lame, the Black Keys were terrific and Justin Timberlake was unbelievable!   In the middle I thought there were lots of very good performances with lots of great set design.

I actually thought Rhianna's performance was outstanding. Also, it was nice to hear Bettencort going off on guitar in the background. I do agree with you on one thing though, Timberlake was simply amazing. The dude is just as talented as they come. You should see him behind a piano.

I didn't really care for JT until he started appearing on SNL.  The guy can also be about as funny as they come.  I just thought Rihanna's song was boring and was overshadowed by everything else.  I haven't watched the last hour of the show yet, but I thought Kelly Clarkson gave the best vocal performance of the first two hours.

Didn't watch the show but saw a news clip of Bruno Mars with a Gretsch Elliot Easton. One of my favorite guitars ever.

Re: OT - The Grammys - Who was hot, and who was not?

Fun was really good. I enjoy some of their songs a lot, and some I can't stand, but their performance was excellent and I'm glad they went with Carry On and not Some Nights again. They were great. If I liked more of their songs I'd go see them live for sure. I'd say they deserved their awards.

The Lumineers were great, IMO. I like seeing five people go up with nothing but a handful of instruments and mics and put on a quality show in the middle of special sets and lighting and effects. Huge fan of the band too, so I'm a little biased there. I got a kick out of when the guitarist lost his hat, and it looked like the mando player dropped a pick or something at one point.

Mumford & Sons were, as always, excellent, although I'd like to see them do some songs from Babel other than I Will Wait. I mean it's a great song and all, but the album is full of great stuff and they play that for everything.

I thought Elton John actually brought down Ed Sheeran's performance. I haven't listened to a lot of Sheeran's stuff, but I watched a video of him playing A Team and another one live at Rock Ness, and he puts on a really great show for just a guy with a small guitar.

I thought Miranda Lambert's wasn't all that great, and I love Home by Dierks Bentley but the performance wasn't really anything special.

The Bob Marley tribute was good. I'm not a giant Bruno Mars fan, but it was a good show.

The Black Keys had an excellent performance. They're a pretty underrated band.

I avoid the Grammys like the plague. It's like all of the shit bands that Rolling Stone praises in one place  With the marginal exception of a band like The Black Keys. But I wouldn't wade thru all of the other shit just to watch them.

@humbuckerstrat

You know, I'm guilty of listening to and even enjoying pop radio, but I tend to agree with you. Except that I just don't really dig the Black Keys.

Good, I'm glad I'm not the only one that h8s those awards shows  Sunday night, I opted to watch Dirty Dancing for the umpteenth time instead of the grammys

Loved Katy Perry!!

Justin Timberlake and Lady GaGa on SNL doing the Liquorville skit was hilarious. Both were incredibly funny.

Liked Justin on Grammys too.

I'm so disassociated from popular culture that I didn't even know it was on (LOL).  I'll probably have a look at Jack White's performance though (and Katy Perry's boobies).

Is it wong of me to, if I had the choice, pick Portia DeRossi over Katy Perry?

Re: OT - The Grammys - Who was hot, and who was not?

Stopped watching years ago. I didn't see Perry or Rhianna, but neither have impressed me at all in a live setting, so I would have to believe they lip-sync'd or they were just awful. What a ray of sunshine I have been today. :smileyhappy:

Re: OT - The Grammys - Who was hot, and who was not?

I only watched until mumford and sons played pretty awesome performance though i missed jack white and the balck keys. For me grammy's is the night were shitty music gets awarded most winners don't make total sense but i understand that you win grammy's out of sells not out of talent but oh well.

Kelly Clarkson winning against Florence and the Machine is complete bullshit same goes with Gotye, who sucks donkey balls, winning against M83. I 've seen both Florence and the Machine and M83 live both of those bands are ridiculously good and talented. But either way winning a grammy doesn't actually qualify you as a good musician well lil'wayne has won a couple and his songs are complete shit.

Timberlake will always be an over-hyped zit for me.

I remember a few Grammys ago he sang a duet next to another performer which duly highlighted his relative mediocrity amongst those deserving of those types of accolades.

Nothing grabbed my gnads and it was just one more Awards confirmation that rock is dead.  I took a bit of guilty pleasure with Taylor Swift's opening number.  It's cute catchy pop that is duly served up to the census group that now drives the award shows.

To me it was a relatively low standard.  The gangsta-style of promoting your clan is now prevailing while a bit more subdued than Kanye's rant.  Bonnie Raitt's Grammy received some brief mention with no show of her music.  She was obviously eliminated from the spotlight due to demographic marketing appeal.  At least they did take Take Five to acknowledge a true great.

But it's definitely more about celebrity than the music.  I just wish they'd all get off my lawn.

Oh, and Johnny Depp's outfit was good for a laugh.  Pirate/Keef/Artist noir.
