Re: How do you all take such beautiful photos of you guitars?

correction to number 2 above: you want a *larger* aperature to increase the "bokeh" or blurring of background. what you meant to say was smaller f-stop which equates to a larger aperature. for example a f/4 will produce more blurry background than an f/11.

blurring background makes image subject 'stand out' more and makes for an interesting photograph.

here is an example photo i took of a common housefly on my back deck:

you can see how blurring the background really brings depth to an image.

good luck!

thanks for the tips, that photo makes me want to smash bugs though.

Good lighting and composition can go a long way even without a killer camera.

I took these with a Canon 20d, 50mm 1.8 lens and I bounce my external flash so I don't have any hot spots.

Cameras are like guitars. You don't need to spend a lot of money to make art. You need patience, creativity and a willingness to do some work.

Matrix Kitty!

Someone asked about taking pictures of black guitars. One of the hardest things to take a good picture of is a black cat. Here is a picture of black cat on a black amp that I love (the cat and the picture, sold the amp). Now I just need a picture with a cat AND my feet in it!

Here's a macro shot I took with my cheap Polaroid - it's Abe, sitting in the Lincoln Memorial on the back of a penny. cropped in Photoshop, but not zoomed....

Re: How do you all take such beautiful photos of you guitars?

I like the comments about background.
Bedsheets make a nice background if you have washed them since you slept on them last. A bed usually doesn't.
Wear some clothes when you take pictures of your guitar. We can see you in the reflections!

Consider what is and isn't in focus. To have everything in focus, have all the parts of the guitar the same distance away, ie, not like this picture.

If you try for some fancy dramatic attempt like this, you will have the headstock in focus and the body blurry or vice versa. My personal preference is to have the foreground in focus and far away things out of focus. To me it looks odd to have the far away part in focus and a big blurry part of the photo in the foreground in front of my nose.

I like the picture in the previous post because it has a dramatic angle, and the foreground in sharp.

Maybe some day I'll get ambitious and share the picture I use for my wallpaper, spanned across two 20" monitors.....
