you're here. to get your avatar back, go to your "my settings" section and click on the avatar tab. from there, it's fairly easy to figure out (even if it is fairly clunky).
take your time. the new site has a lot of good things going for it, IMO. there's some not-so-good things that will get addressed, i'm sure. in the meantime, we'll all struggle and learn and grow together.
