:thu: Gibson and Fender are easy to resell because lots of buyers know and favor the brand. Everything else takes huge hit. Some of the most prominent used gear stores I frequent won't ever keep more than one used PRS in stock at once. When it comes to boutiques, they have a limited cult following, it can be hard to find a buyer. Most sale for half price or less or sit around collecting dust. Even when you buy used, it may still take a hit if you don't have time to sit on it and wait for someone who wants that model and color.

I agree with this for the most part. G&L USA customs lose value tremendously but Suhr seems to hold value pretty well. But these markets still depend on luck that someone in the emporioum shares your same tastes and is ready to pull the trigger when you want to sell. Gibsons, Fenders, and Gretschs have a ready made market of demanding buyers because the brands have already done all the hype and marketing for you. I am sure that if I wanted to sell my Strat or Les Paul that I would profit. The loss would come when I try to replace them. That's why they are keepers until a windfall comes in.
There's no magic answer to this question - it varies by brand. For example, Hamer has fairly weak resale, while Collings seem to carry their value pretty well. With some makers with waits or a hard to get factor, used price can equal or exceed new prices. Danocasters seem to go pretty much right on for what people paid for them. As you move up the price scale, however, by default you will only have a more limited subset of buyers, so an expensive guitar may take longer to move - which is separate from getting a good price. Ultimately, I think you need to be smart about selling. Boutique brands don't have the broad audience or name recognition, but if you sell on something like the TGP Emporium, where there are a lot of shoppers that are hip to the boutique stuff, there's definitely a market. A lot of boutique stuff moves on there. It's also a great resource to check resale on particular brands.

At the same time, I gas for a nicely worn and used /beat up player's guitar and don't devalue them for scratches and chipped paint. I love the cigarette burns on my 50's Strat that obviously led to it's low price at GC, but to me it makes it more valuable than a mint stock guitar with no vibe or mojo . Guitars need to be broken in, some harder than others (Fenders).
I unloaded a Squier tele for almost what I paid for it (it was $229 new) in a private sale because it was hardly used.

agreed. if you want to buy and sell boutique stuff, do it at The Gear Page. the Emporium is filled with barely used equipment from all the top names. sometimes the prices are merely good, other times they're spectacular.
if one of your concerns of a purchase is "resale value," perhaps you should re-consider said purchase in the first place.
