Best out there? No idea. But for best overall value I think Armor Gold is near the top of the list. Top quality cables at mid-level prices. As for gold plated.. snake oil.

I love Bullet Cables, mostly because they make a coiled cable that works great and doesn't suck highs, and their prices are very reasonable. The shell casing jackets look awesome, too.
I too am a big fan of the Bullet Coily cables and I also like their solderless patch cable kits.
The Bullet coily cables and Armor Gold are what I use 99% of the time. I do have a Planet Waves american stage cable that I keep in my gig bag because it's much less bulky and also sounds great (not to mention they are pretty inexpensive).

The best guitar cable is a short one (7ft-10ft for me).
Other than that, I love George L's for the ease of use (in conjunction with the solderless plugs), the resistance to curling & knotting, the lack of mechanical noise and the good tone.

Can you guys really tell the difference between the sound in cables?
Yes, but (speaking personally) generally only if plugged straight into an amp that has a very good clean fidelity, with a clear high-end – e.g. a Fender tube amp with a fairly 'simple' old-fashioned circuit.
I once tried a Lava cable and a George L's cable, of equal length, side-by-side and I preferred the George L's – more transparency in the high-frequencies to my ear. YMMW.
P.S. That was using a Strat, whose high-end emphasis seems to help differentiate cables.
