so I just got a used mxr 108 fuzz and I put it after my polytune and droptune which are both true bypass and the fuzz just has this thin raspy fizzy awful sound when kicked on with or without the buffer switch on.. is it busted inside or is there something I'm missing here
I just want that thick sputtery fuzz

Try dialing back the volume on your guitar first

Place it before the Droptune. The Droptune has a buffer in it and, whether engaged or bypassed, this converts your guitar signal so that it is "low impedance". Such a conversion allows your signal to withstand cable capacitance and remain bright despite long cable runs, but will mess with Fuzz Faces (i.e. the Classic 108) when placed before them in the signal chain. Place the MXR first in your chain, keep the "Buffer" switch off, and you should get a fairly thick, rich fuzz sound.

ok I tried it at the start of my board.. it was better but still does not come close to the awesomeness of my visual sound angry fuzz so I'm goanna sell it

yeah played it pretty loud.. not rehearsal or giggin loud but about half that volume... still very thin and fizzy.. maybe I'm too used to the visual sound angry fuzz which sounds great at any volume

how does it sound if it's the only pedal between you and the amp?

tried that too same thing ![]()
I don't know if the previous owner messed it or if I just don't like the pedal.

its really just the nature of the beast on this one. i'm always putting the 108 in a different place (twss)
i usually run the fuzz around 2-3 o clock and put drive into it to put it into fuzzy sonic goodness.
the 108 has one of the best ovd sounds i've heard thus far. but, it does take alot of experimenting with it.
i think since people see the 2 knobs they think it will be easy. it is def a unique pedal with the buffer as it turns it into a completely different pedal, so you pretty much have to learn how it works with it on or off.

Are you playing it loud?
Because a fuzz face at low volume is poo.
I've always found that this bit of conventional wisdom was dead wrong. :catmad:

yeah, I sold it... I just love the angry fuzz which sounds good anywhere on the board and at any volume .. yeah its not a germanium or silicon circuit (at least I don't think) but it sounds amazing

Oh yeah, fuzz faces sound excellent at low volumes. That's where all the great fuzz face tones of the past and future were captured.
Shenanigans.
And I don't know what dzjupp is talking about- they couldn't be any easier to use. Always max the fuzz and crank the volume as high as the situation allows. Use your guitar's volume to adjust. Done.
Have you even used a fuzz face? :womansad:

I find this pretty true as well, at least with a fuzz face. Crank the fuzz or near max, adjust volume. It isn't that difficult. Adjust guitar's volume for a bit less fuzz, but depending on the pickups, it doesn't take much sometimes. I have the (new) MXR Hendrix Fuzz Face, and out of the box it sounded like poo. Turns out a trim pot on the inside must have been tinkered with. As soon as I turned it a bit, that lovely heavy fuzz sound came right back like it should. I do sort of wish there were a few more controls for tweaking, but I guess that's why people buy a Skreddy Lunar Module deluxe.

Yeah **bleep**!
You play them loud with the fuzz cranked.
That's common **bleep** knowledge.
