I'm not looking for a subdecay prometheus or a lovetone meatball, I'm looking for a small, simple, cheap envelope filter. I have an ashdown bass one, but it is huge and dumb. what kind of filters do y'all dig?

I dig the meatball. Seriously though the dod 440 is pretty cool, lots of clones out there.

The Malekko E Filter is based on the 440, and is small, easy to use, reasonably priced, and sounds great.

I did a review for the Carl Martin Classic Optical Envelope on effectsdatabase
it's a nice one if you want to keep control over the effect, not so good for extreme filtering
the big box EHX Q-Tron has been my favorite for many years now, its not small, but it's cheap used.
even the Meatball did not impress me as much as the Q-Tron

440 clone is probably your best bet, but I've also heard good things about the little purple guyatone autowah. They're certianly tiny. I imagine a used nano three knob q-tron would be pretty hawt too.

Thanks for all the input. Phil, the malekko has intrigued me for a long time. as far as dod 440s and q-trons, are they both fairly tame, or can they get kind of wierd? I realized that the reason I want an envelope filter is becase the flaming lips use a roland funny cat all over embryonic. admittedly the funny cat sounds bad, but is still has sparked my filterGAS.
have any of you played with the q-tron+? the effects loop on that seems like it could either be really cool or a cheesey sounding gimmick.

Alright, I just dug through some demos and it definitely sounds like I want something dod 440 based. the shape of the sound makes a lot more sense than the q tron family.

The Boss one is kind of neat, although not many people use it. If you ever heard the solo on that Edie Brickell song What I Am it is the FT-2.
The DOD is nice and it's pretty cheap as well.
That is the FT-2 on the left hand corner. The cool thing is you can plug an expression pedal in and use it as a Wah.

+1 on the Malekko filter as well as the Boss FT-2
Pretty sure Jerry Garcia used the FT-2 on some of their funkier jams and tunes like Shakedown St. Either way, both are simple give a great envelope sound and can be had for less than a c-note.

The 440 is a bit understated IMO.
Not a terrible filter, but definitely listen to one before you buy.
The DOD FX25 recomendations are spot on. Cheap... easy to use... classic OTA based filter sounds. I would avoid the two knob version though.

Nope, Garcia used an original Mutron III on Shakedown and several other tunes. Qtron+ comes about the closest to that of what is on the market.
FWIW, I have a Qtron+, and it definitely can bring the funk. It is awfully tweaky; there are lots of good sounds in there, but it's really sensitive to guitar volume (basically keep it dimed). It also doesn't get quite as freaky as some other envelope fitlers out there, but it having its own effects loop gives you a way to add more weirdness if needed.

did anyone mention the 3leaf stuff yet?
