The problem with making a DIY spring reverb is that the reverb tank takes more power and voltage than a battery typically supplies, so you pretty much have to use an external power supply.

There was a time when I saw this badass reverb DIY build on ebay. It looked like a BB sized enclosure, with what looked like a Strat trem spring afixed to two poles coming out of the enclosure. I lost the bid, and have never seen anything like it since, but it looked like such a fun pedal. I'm always keeping an eye out for one...
