I've always found that high end dynamic mics (SM7, 421, RE20) sound better on loud singers than condensers do. Condensers just weren't designed to be shouted into.
and the SM7 works better for me for recording than expensive condenser mics.

No doubt. I was in the studio a few years ago and the engineer put some expensive Sony condenser mic on my voice that was the flavor of the day for pop singers [mic costs around 6000 bucks new, I forget the model number] and it didn't sound good. Switched to a cheaper dynamic mic and that did the trick By the way, I read that Michael Jackson had used the SM7 for his voice on recordings. He's not exactly who I think of when it comes to loud singers.

Not at all. I prefer the Audix i5 over the SM57 quite often.
I'm personally more interested in reviewing a pair of TLM102's. The body is even smaller, but they're still a side-address LDC, and from the little I've heard, they're more neutral than the (IMHO) somewhat hyped TLM103. There's still a presence peak there in the 10kHz range, but not nearly as broad and wide. They're less expensive too - about $700 "street" vs around $1,100 for the '103.
For the same price as the 103, I'd rather have the Mojave MA-200 or a Soundelux U195 / Bock Audio 195. IMO, both are better mikes, and more versatile than the TLM103. YMMV.

David Bock really knows microphones, and IMO, he makes some of the best mikes currently in production.
I'm listening to the Bock 195 and I have to say it sounds incredible. It's definitely in strong consideration.

depend son what your micing up. I prefer the I5 on some amps and some drums. where the 57 i like on V30's and more gainy situations. I feel as if the I5 has a flatter response than the 57, where the 57 is more middy and filtered.
I like the audix i5 more than a sm57. Does that make me crazy? I've got 103 GAS too.

The i5 has a bit of a "scoop" in the mids. They both have a presence peak, but in different areas. Also, the bottom end is different - it feels much more substantial with the i5 than with the '57.

I just bought a Shure SM7B. Anyone have any experience with this mic? What say you?
