Classic LA studio. I'm really looking forward to seeing that!

I watched the other night. I thought it was really well done, and quite interesting, but I took issue with some of it. Watch it and report back here what you think.

Just finished watching it - I thought it was pretty great.
What did you take issue with?
For the first half hour/hour brought back (mostly bad) memories of arguing that took place in the studios I've been in - egos clashing and all that.
I very much agree with a lot of the romantisicm / real difference by recording analog vs digital, but the practicality of it for most folks isn't there these days, I think there are some fun lessons to take away from the approach though. Another thing that I don't think hits home for a lot of the rock star types is they have lived the dream in one form or another their whole lives, even when they were dirt poor with a dream. Not having a day job and grinding away doesn't really factor in.
Great movie, really enjoyed it.

I just don't get the whole "anti-Pro tools" evangelizing. Like, if you're not using a $300k desk to record to $300 tape, what you're making just couldn't possibly be good.
That said, I really enjoyed most of it, and would recommend it.

There was definetly some worship of the Neve console, justified or not. As Grohl mentions, that was the origin of the film - telling the story of the console. I think the console not ever being switched out for a more modern one, and all the history tied to it made it somethign special. Its a piece of furniture - many of the guys in the movie all said 'man I remember spending hours sitting right here'. Like a favorite chair. I think history was a big part of it too, which I think was actually explained better on Grohl's recent David Letterman apperance than in the movie - to him music history is just as important as 'history of presidents' as I think he put it. Seeing Sound City go away - where many famous records were recorded just seemed like a bad thing ot him. Odd he didn't simply buy the place, given his wealth, and how the room that shouldn't be good for drums yet somehow was - seemed just as - if not more importnat than the Neve console. But he bought the console instead and moved it into his own studio - and in that way preserved the 'history'.
But yeah I don't agree with the whole there is 'magic' inside thing, you could see him mocking the explnation from Neve about what makes sound sound 'good'. They did praise digital in the way Rezner uses it ('as a tool, not a crutch'). In general, I think they were just against how you can make things perfect with digital, by yourself, 'easiely'. Working with other human beings, and doing it in a studio setting was what they all felt was the ideal way to do recording. It may have come off as a little more than that, but I think that is the main message, if there was one to be found.
I do feel that recording things analog has a certain 'thing' to it you lose with digital. Whether that is a big deal or worth chasing is up to the individual. The ease of using a laptop sure makes sense to me over paying a ton of money per day. Like anything, it all depends on what your interests are.

And I get that. It's a nostalgia piece at its core. Honestly, that's what made it so cool. What we're talking about is a fairly small portion of the film. It just irked me a bit.
Also, I thought the exact same thing about the room. It seems like the whole thing about the place was the drum sound they got out of that room.

Just watched it last night. Each time they played a snippet from nevermind I was like, holy shit, that record sounds glorious.

His significance was big with that studio in that he generated it a lot of money and was a product from one of the owners. I thought Grohl being so excited to play with him was the odd part.
He was definetly a 80s icon though, shitty acting and other songs that were popular at the time.

I just watched it last night and loved it though. Definitely strange to think about the fact that a lot of musicians in the future may never get to record in an actual studio with analog gear and tape decks. dude his hit wasn't Butterfly or Bittersweet Symphony, it was fucking Jessie's Girl.
There are very few songs on this planet that come even close to the catchiness of that tune. absolute masterpiece.
I'm supposed to be retired but I'm a sucker for Jessie's Girl.

the production of Nevermind is 100x better than In Utero. Fuck Steve Albini, dude is so overrated.

I'd be happy to make a record with Albini, but I'd MUCH rather get the chance to work with Butch Vig. Nevermind sounds awesome.

The song Trent, Homme and Grohl did was amazing. Homme's baseline oozed cool.
I definitely liked that one, but honestly, I think my favorite song they were recording in Grohl's studio was the one with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the end. I was really digging that one.
