Pickups for Jazzmaster: Best authentic tone, but works for rock music?

I've done some research as to what pickups are available: Fralin, Lollar, SD, Novak, Rose, GFS, etc.....

I've currently got some Rose Picassos in my CIJ JM....which are humbucking JM pickups.
They're pretty sweet, but I'd like to regain some of that authentic JM tone.

I'm just not sure which single coil JM pickups are more classic JM sounding, but yet still handle higher gain as well?

suggestions?

I say you get a vintage spec neck pu--which is the classic JM sound. Then get either a tele or p90 JM bridge pu from Novak--for the rock toans.

I got Novaks, love them. All around great pickups.

Mascis says that Seymour Duncan Antiquities are the closest to the original that he's tried.

Novak is always good if you want a replacement pickup for your Jazzmaster that sounds like different pickups.

My guitarist uses a jazz with Duncan antiquities sometimes and we're in a punk band. So I say those should work.

I've got Novaks as well. Love them--I have the JM-V (vintage spec) in the neck and it sounds great, even with the heavy stuff.

My other big thing is microphonic feedback.

I'm getting a little with high gain at gig volume with the Picassos..........but that's usually closer to the amp. (not sure if it's the pickups or something else causing it?)

Will the singles be any better or worse?

My CIJ has the standard Japanese JM PU at the bridge and an American JM PU at the neck.
This works well for me.

Re: Pickups for Jazzmaster: Best authentic tone, but works for rock music?

I've got these overwound JM pickups that sound amazing with distortion:

http://www.at-the-creamery.co.uk/ext...ickup-set.html

The overwinding makes them a bit less bright with more mids. A bit more P90-ish in the mids but still with the JM tone.

If you're not in Europe I'm sure any of the US boutique people could make you something similar.

I really didn't like the CIJ bridge pickup. thin, 2D and harsh. I didn't mind the neck.

I talked to Ken at Rose about the Picassos, and IIRC he said they were 4-conductor, which means you can coil split them.
Arrangements? How about I hit on two and four, and you shut the fuck up?

Re: Pickups for Jazzmaster: Best authentic tone, but works for rock music?

Check out the Curtis Novak JM-FAT. I have a JM-V in the neck and a JM-90 in the bridge, and it's a great combo, but if you're looking for classic JM tone with more beef suited for rock then I hear that the JM-FAT fits the bill perfectly. Curtis is great to work with too.
