I suggest you start with the decision on screen size. Once you know the size of the screen the other factors will be a lot easier to decide on. If you have a screen that is huge you'll want to go higher on resolution. Plasma is not really an option for a lot of the smaller screen sizes. You can't get a huge CRT, etc...

Right, and what I'm saying is that you should see little to no difference between componenet and HDMI if the settings are identical.
Since you are seeng a waaaay big difference, I'm guessing you are comparing 1080i to 1080p, since componenet will not display 1080p when using those devices. And there is a big difference between interlaced and progressive.
Yeah that makes sense. Settings on the xbox menus are the same though, but perhaps the component output defaults to 1080i anyway? I dunno.

I've heard you should wait until after the Super Bowl this weekend, or even until spring, to get better deals because stores are moving their old models.
I'm also suspicious of not getting anything other than the major brands. Seems like HDTVs are a "get what you pay for" kind of deal and you can't go wrong with a Samsung, Panasonic, LG or Sony. Toshiba and Vizio are also good, but I'd consider them a step down.
You probably don't need anything bigger than 50", but there is an adage that you never regret buying too big of a TV.
720p is probably fine in theory, but I'm only seeing Plasmas at 720p nowadays. Any legit LCD tv over 32" probably 1080p by default. If you're getting some 46" 720p LCD that likely means you're getting an off-brand that sucks.

I'm mostly on board with you on this, but defintiely wouldn't put Toshiba in the same category as Vizio. I've had Toshiba, Vizio, and Samsung tvs and the Toshibas are on par with the Samsungs IMO. The Vizio was a good tv until it died, but the others were just better and worth the extra cash.
Also, holy shit this quoting system is terrible.

Lines on the side of a CRT, marking shows some age or if it's pulling in a bit could just be a drifting not failing component. Could "work" a lot longer.
I like CRT, there is a glossiness, good quality and maybe the best SD. One flaw is even the best have some bend to the pic. The new TVs can be amazing but are often frustrating regarding source quality, to me. Plasma is excellent but best for cold climates due to the heat.
720p ... technically should be adequate at 40" large room but but it comes down to what the actual picture looks like and how much TV is important to you. Antenna is at least as good a picture as cable, but limited content.

46 and under will not be any differance in 720 and 1080... I still have a Sony XBR 34-910 that kills people with it's picture and it's running 720. They don't belive me when I tell them. 46 is a big tv.

This shows that at 50", you can obtain full benefit of 1080 if sitting at 6.5 ft away, of course assuming 20/20 vision. If not even full benefit, but some benefit, perhaps at 8 ft.
Once you are at 9ft, you get zero benefit with 1080, I repeat ZERO benefit, unless you have better than 20/20 vision.

I'm also looking for a TV soon, to replace my aging and small 27" Sony crt. LED seems to be the more popular option over LCD. Primarily because it's more evenly bright. Maybe that's overly simplistic. Is the Insignia brand at BB pretty good? Feature set and price are good, picture seems nice too. Not sure about reliability, but user ratings are pretty good. Otherwise I'd go with Samsung, LG, Panasonic or maybe another Sony. I'd look at Toshiba and Vizio too if they're reliable.
I actually need 2 TV's. one for a new Xbox that's promised to my son soon, and then another tv for hi def cable, blu Ray and maybe a Wii.

There is a noticeable difference with 120Hz. Some people like it because it looks "sharper", but with movies it really looks strange (to me), kinda like a live video broadcast. Definitely do a side-by-side compariso to see what you prefer.
