Do you know what working conditions were like in his shop? I don't. What if he treated his employees fairly? Why would there be a need for a union?

That's an absurd analogy. Where have you worked where it's been like this? I do appreciate the things that unions brought about such as the 5-day workweek, safer conditions, vacation, etc. but I've never felt the need to unionize anywhere I worked at any time.
Seriously, this is like saying "If your POW camp guards are treating you well why would you want to escape"?

I can believe people in his factory not wanting to unionize an extremely small business if they were treated fairly well, but that story reads so biased I am surprised there is not a part where a union thug with a hammer and sickle tattoo on his forehead punches an orphan in the throat, then Mike Matthews holds the kid while screaming "WHHHHYYYY!", and then a single tear rolls down his cheek and falls down onto the kid and the kid revives.
