Along with the comment "I'm sure the argument would be that the rate is higher because of better detection and diagnosing, but still, it's food for thought..."

That kind of misinformation is downright dangerous. If you choose to not feed your kid any fruit of veges, that's shitty but only affects your  kid.

If you choose to not get them vaccinated, it affects everyone. It becomes an issue of public health.

This reminds me of what a professor at my university once said. In the 60's it was believed autism was caused by a lack of love/affection of the parents towards the child. He had over the years told many parents that they hadn't shown their child enough love. The parents were obviously devestated by guilt. When he told us about this, you could hear the remorse in his voice.

its like how people nowadays are struggling to figure out why ADHD is diagnosed so much more...

maybe its because insurance companies tend to not want to reimburse for therapy services except for a few diagnosis codes... 314.01 ADHD is one of the few they accept.

So a kid coming to therapy because their anxiety makes it difficult for them to be able to focus in a class where they are forced to sit next to a kid that teases them in a few classes during the day doesn't qualify for an anxiety disorder, but it does for the ADHD code where you can provide help to fix the situation.

I think autism spectrum disorders are just better diagnosed now. Or we accept a narrower range of behaviors as normal. Watch some old tv shows and movies and you'll see tons of people who we'd identify as such simply be considered nerdy or normal

Most all of this comes from a study done long ago linking a preservative named Thimerosal to autism. It is used in the development of some vaccines in the early stages. However, the study, I believe, has since been discredited. The canadians and other countries (including the U.S.) removed or reduced Timerosal only to see autism continue to rise.

The most recent and credible cause I have seen is that of a hyper connectivity between brain regions at the lack of long term connections. What causing that is however a mystery.

Speaking as a doctor, albeit a mad one, I'd like to point out that a lot of doctors are, IMO, quacks. Several years ago I was misdiagnosed as being visible even though I was invisible at the time. A lot of people will probably ask, "how the hell does that happen"? I don't have an answer for that but it does happen.

As the father of an 11 year old autistic boy I can say that chart is a half truth. My son changed after a series of vaccines at age two. I believe part was a genetic disposition that reacted to whatever was in the shots. My wifes brother, who is an army vet and a designer for their vehicles, was diagnosed with Asbergers not more than 4 years ago. So I do not blame the vaccine per se. It's like being a person who gets a flu shot then gets the flu two days later. Or being one of those who gets all the bad symptoms from a drug like Ambien.

We have a daughter that is 22 months old. We have elected to get only certain vaccines and the ones she has received do not contain certain chemicals to prolong their shelf life. She has know. Her ABCs since 14 months, has memorized twelve songs that she sings every night. And she carries in intelligent conversations about topics of her interest.

vaccines aren't as safe as "they'd" like you to believe, ask anyone in the military.  

i find it odd that people are skeptical of everything the government does unless it's injecting your children with serum.  and those that question it are labeled the weird ones.

personally i don't believe vaccines and autism are connected.  more like bad diet and semantics for the alarmingly high rate.  severe cases of autism are another matter all together.

either way i'm glad i was vaccinated and came out ok. and now don't have to worry about a series of medical problems and rashes and whatever else

There are some people who are truly autistic. There are a ton of kids who are diagnosed with a disorder (autism, ADD, etc...) simply because their parents would rather have them drugged up then deal with the trouble of raising them.

Yes its far more humane to let mental health and developmental disorders go untreated. Do you shed a tear everytime a sanatarium is closed?

In other news, I beleive that vaccines enter my body through hollow needles. What is being done about that???

As parents you come to certain crossroads as you bring up your kids.  We decided to vaccinate all of our kids.  If we didn't and one of our children got sick and died from one of the diseases that we could have prevented I would never forgive myself.  As I watched the needle go into that little tiny leg/ arm etc. it did bother me as to the "what if's?" though.  Some of the vaccinations cause fever and other symptoms as well so the worry doesn't end when you leave the health office.

Thank goodness all of them are fine (other than this wretched fucking cold going around!).
