Effects - Pedals, Multi-Effects, and Floor Boxes

I came across what I'm assuming is a home made boost pedal. It was left behind by a musician at a gig. It's in a plain black metal housing and has a single switch and volume knob.

It sounds like a completely clean boost. Which is nice because it should be a simple clean slate for me to start with. I've always wanted to build an effect pedal, especially a fuzz, this should be an easy way to start, I'm assuming.

I want to tinker with it and turn it into a fuzz pedal, or maybe something tube screamer like. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me some tips?

i would think you'd need to replace enough parts, put it on a new vero board, and will definitely have to buy some components to fuzz it up.

Looks like a MXR Micro Amp. It even has a 56K resistor next to the IC (green-blue-etc.). A sort of fuzzy distortion could be done by increasing the gain a lot and adding a volume control to get it in control. For example, by changing that 56K to 1M. I would recommend at least as much, use its boost to overdrive another dirt or your amp more. Buy a pedal for what else you need many are cheap.

Yeah, I've got to say it would be a lot easier to start from scratch than to try and mod that into a fuzz, most likely. I'm sure you could tweak it to make the sound a bit gainier, but a dedicated circuit like the Fuzz Face is simple, and will most likely sound way better than just tweaking this guy. Or like someone else mentioned, keep the clean boost in tact and run it into another circuit to make it fuzzier. Dual pedals are always fun!

yea, i'd just use the enclosure, knob, LED, maybe pot, and if any components can be reused in the making of a simple fuzz. but start anew

If you re-use the box/knob, I would (personally) remove the pcb intact and resist the temptation to steal parts. That way, you can just toss it into another box when you realize you want to push the fuzz harder than your guitar's pickups alone are able to do.

Once you get good enough at the DIY, it may be possible to shoehorn in a second PCB into that box and have BOTH your clean boost and fuzz in the siinglw box. It looks like a 1.5" sqr protoboard could fit in, and that is enough room for a circuit like the one Maca posted.
