It's unlikely to achieve the status or mystique of Loveless but I like the new record a lot. It's probably inevitable that some people will criticise the new album for sounding dated or formulaic while others will question the band's attempt to deviate from their signature sound on some songs. I think they've obtained a good balance. A lot of the material may actually be well over a decade old but I don't think the follow-up to Loveless would have sounded much like 'm b v' had it emerged in the mid-90's.

The album is all right. Not amazing but still pretty good. Saw them live on Sunday and they were shit. Kevin's Hiwatt wasn't working and they had to restart a lot of songs.

Can't believe I am just getting wind of this now. My buddy from work told me they had a new record out and I'm like "What? No way?!". Going to give it a listen from the youtube link right now.

Still have not heard it - but I really want to. Do any particular tracks stand out guys?

it's a masterpiece, without "if" and "but". it's extraordinary good.

Just finished listening to it. I really, really like it. It definitely feels like a natural progression from "Loveless". Worth the wait, I think.

"in another way" and "wonder 2" are the most striking, modern, and new-sounding IMO.
"who sees you" and "she found now" both sound like they could've come from the Loveless era, which means they are great of course.

I remember reading a long ago interview with Kevin Shields where he describes the canned Loveless follow-up as being Drums N Bass influenced. I would not be surprised if the last three songs are from those tapes as they have that very syncopated D&B rhythm. Almost Alec Empire influenced, sort of.
In many ways, the first three songs are sort of Loveless side 3, then the record starts to veer in new territory for them. And that is a good thing, all around.
I like this record and hope Mr. Shields can use the latter half of his life to releasing a whole lot more music.

Ditto on all points

This album is solid, whether or not the one that came before it was as iconic as it is. Like has been mentioned before already, the progression of this album from track to track is almost a bit chronological feeling(if that makes sense?), and I like it like that. "in another way" is far away my favorite track on this album so far. A little bit of it almost has an Autolux vibe, to me. Also, this probably goes without saying, but this album is INSANE through headphones.

probably sacrelig--but I've always thought Loveless was entirely overrated. I'll have to dig it back out again, but honestly, I think m b v is better after just a few listens.
Loveless was the IT album when it came out amongst the larger circle of people I knew at the time. I didn't get it either. Too busy being an insufferable punk snob probably, haha.
Later though, in the late 90's, it kind of grabbed me and never let go. For one thing, it is truly unique in a world that produces more and more output but less and less unique-ness. And for a record that in many ways sounds like shit (hardly any bass, overly compressed yet noticeably lost the dynamic wars of ITS time), it's amazing how amazing it sounds. If that makes any sense. The guitars growl and float at you while the vocals hover over and within the growling floating guitars. If you listen to it loud enough.
A few more observations about the new record after having a wonderful experience listening to it while driving in a snow storm at night:
1)It is significantly less compressed than Loveless
2)The vox are a bit louder and more pronounced
3)There is considerably more bass frequency in the production, not near as much high passing as Loveless. Though not necessarily from a bass guitar.
4)There is quite a bit of reference to the chord progressions and sound of Sometimes from Loveless, especially in the first three songs which makes me wonder if Lost In Translation influenced him to explore the ideas of Sometimes further.
5)As mentioned earlier in this thread, there is no reverse reverb
6)The whammy bar is considerably more pronounced.
7)There is echo and/or reverb on the vocals. I think on Loveless there wasn't.
8)They are both great driving records. There is nothing like getting into the car on a fresh spring blue sky day and Only Shallow providing the soundtrack. And as I just discovered driving during a snow storm at night, the new record does for the night time what Loveless did for the day time.

I think the new 'album' is horrible; no memorable melodies, and the ideas (such as they are) half-baked. Very little feels organic, in the way that all of the great tracks on Loveless seemed to emanate from an enthusiastic embrace of a processed riff, etc.
It's nice that it's making some people happy. This will make some year-end 'best of' lists simply because of the long absence, and then will quickly fade into the woodwork.

I totally disagree with that. Think the vocal melodies throughout are actually quite memorable. The whole album definitely feels like a natural progression from Loveless. And of course it's going to make several end of year lists simply due to the circumstances of the band and the release, but taken out of context I still think it's a very bold, good album.
