Re: I could use an assistant or two... (co-moderator candidates)

if it's about the gear used,
until it name drops an ideology you dont agree with,in which case you would have every right to have a different thread without that aspect and once again it can be about the gear. It isnt for you to decide what others are comfortable reading through, wether you can understand that position, agree with it,or not.

Re: I could use an assistant or two... (co-moderator candidates)

In the last couple days while this topic has evolved, I have noticed distinctly that the people who want to be the new moderators are talking about stuff like cleaning up HCFX and making it like it used to be when that has never been the attitude on this forum. Phil does a very good job of MAINTAINING this forum but neither overmoderating it nor forcing his own view of what the forum should be upon the community. I think the way things are here have long been the result of Phil doing just enough to keep the forum running. He does everything right so I am usually not sure he has done much at all. Im not convinced that finding another person that can do that will be as easy as culling out old-timers or "nice guys" that everyone seems to like to take on the job. In the last 24 hours the forum has become over-moderated with all the candidates ambitiously reporting posts. It has also stirred up the community so that people are now creating flaggable posts and causing more problems because of all the moderator talk. Basically, I think its going to be pretty hard to find another moderator like Phil that is going to have the right touch for this forum. I think its going to be especially hard to find someone that wont project their own view of what the forum should be on the community to its detriment.
My apologies for the unfortunate side effects of the process. :smileysurprised: I didn't agree with all the moderator candidate suggestions, and I tried to comment about their input either way (IOW, if I agreed or disagreed). I thank you for your kind words about how I've tried to moderate this forum. I have always tried to remember it wasn't initially "my" forum, and I've tried to allow the forum community to have a say as much as possible in terms of the things "outside" of the HC Site Rules, such as OT discussions, etc. However, not everyone agrees with you regarding the way I have moderated here, or with the "amount" of coverage or moderating I do. That's OK too - I expect dissent, and encourage people to give me their input on such matters, even if they don't agree with me. I already have "my" own forum, and that's the appropriate place for me to "project my own view on what the forum should be" - it's my forum, with my name in the title / banner. Different situation... I am in no hurry to add any new moderators, and I want to be extremely careful if I do so. And that's why I wanted to try to do a little vetting before bringing my recommendations (if any) to the other mods / admins for consideration. That discussion among the moderators / admins has always been our policy. From a technical standpoint, I can add moderators to any forum on HC at any time, but I value their input too, and we always try to reach a consensus on such matters. That's why no one who has ever been banned will stand a chance - that is nearly always a "deal breaker" for several of us. Finding the right person to co-moderate here will be difficult. I'm not just going to pick names out of a hat, or accept any volunteer who says they want to do it. I do want to see why they want to do it, and I want an idea of how they'll approach things, and what they feel is something they should address, and what is the appropriate way to do so. I'm going to question them, and observe them, and evaluate them. And if I don't feel I can find someone who will be a good "fit", then no on will get the nod. Believe me, the last thing I want to do is co-mod with someone who I have significant differences of opinion regarding how the forum should be moderated, or with someone I have to constantly follow behind and fix their excessive actions... But I still think an additional moderator or two would be beneficial - but only if we can find the right person or people. :smileyhappy:
