I'm VERY fastidious about my diet when about to play! No greasy foods/ anything fried goes in - I sweat it out, and then I'm dropping sticks and all kinds of nonsense. I also skip on anything spicy - mainly quality carbs and protein to make sure I've got the energy.
I always drink a coconut water, too - the potassium and electrolytes really help keep me loose and energetic, and I like having a Gatorade G2 on hand if I start feeling slow. Bear in mind this was for 4-hour hard rock cover gigs, so I needed to have it all up!
Beer is a must. For a 9-1 show, I'd probably have 6 or 7 with that band... the new band will be more like 3-4. I like beer.
Post gig: Imma wanna face me a pizza.

Dieing during the gig is SO metal! \''/
Waking up to EMT's isn't fun. I've done it twice, and don't care to do it again. Both times my blood sugar was in the low 20's. Those didn't happen at a gig though, they were the day after. The first time it was 2 days before I got married.![]()

Today's Question: Do you ever shop for drum equipment online and if so, what sites?
I try to support local mom and pop stores as much as possible but sometimes, you can find some hard to locate items (or just good prices) online. Do any of you use any particular online music shops? I have used http://www.mycymbal.com andhttp://www.drummersworld.com (for rare and exotic percussion).

Not usually, but on rare occasion I have used Musicians Friend.

Half and half. No one in Portland carries a good selection of ProMark sticks. A few places have great prices on a few items, and used hardware is always awesome to dig through, especially at the local 5-Star shop.
For big ticket items, I can usually get them mailed faster and cheaper than anyone local can get them to me. Guitar Center is a joke if its not in stock, and mom&pop places have to wait to make bigger special orders many times, and wont order single items as needed. Im willing to pay a bit more for items that are in stock, but not pay more, and wait longer. We just dont live in those times any longer.
I shop the online stores against each other all I can, really haggle to find the best deals I can. Today I ordered from Zzounds and got them to match the GC Pres Day prices on items that GC doesnt even carry. I have also shopped MF, SameDayMusic, Cascio, and Music123.

It's been ages since I've bought anything, but I have bought heads online from massmusic.net. They always had really good prices.
Cymbals and drums I will never ever buy without hearing first--in person--and inspecting. I prefer to see hardware in person, too.
Really though I haven't had the money to buy anything new in a while, and I don't forsee it in the near future either.

Both....seems to be more and more online. Just ordered heads, batters and reso's for a 7 piece kit. So much cheaper online. I still buy sticks at the mom and pops and occasional other small items, cymbal cleaner, high hat clutch. Musicians Friend....zzSounds....Geartree..etc..

Only one M&P shop in town and he mostly specializes in flipping used gear. Other than that, I'm stuck with Sam Ash and Guitar Center. So I order a fair amount of stuff online -- primarily: Ebay; Casico; MassMusic; Rupps.

Today's Question: Do you prefer to play chain drive pedals or direct drive pedals?
I used to play chain drive pedals exclusively until about two years ago but these days, I'm a direct drive cat. I just dig my Axis pedal. I find it to be ultra smooth and responsive, allowing me to easily pull off things that are a little trickier with a chain drive.

Direct for me. I've had my Axis A Longboards for 10 years now, and don't like the feel of chain/strap drive pedals anymore.

I have 2 direct drive pedals. Both Ludwig Speed Kings. And I have 3 Chain Drive pedals Two IC Powerglide doubles and an IC Powerglide single.
I'll be honest with you, I really can't tell the difference between the Speed King and the IC Powerglide single. I guess that at the speed I play I don't notice any slop or lag from the chain drive. Also when I bought my first set of IC doubles I tried the powerglide and the rollerglide models and I couldn't feel ant difference.

I used to have a Speed King, but I've been playing on a Pearl Eliminator for many years now. I wouldn't mind going back to the Speed King for its simplicity, but the Eliminator is nice too.

I
In my 50 years of playing I've used strap, direct and chain driven pedals and can honestly say I like all three types. It's based more on a pedal to pedal basis, rather than a specific type. I've encountered good and bad in all three types over the years.

Today's Question: Is there a "holy grail" of drums that you desire?
I've never been a gear cat but I've wanted a Zelkova snare drum by Canopus since I first played one back in 2001. They are incredibly warm sounding and responsive, having been made from one solid piece of 200 year old Zelkova wood. If I had $1,400.00 to spare, I would definitely be the proud owner of one by now.

Today's Question: Is there a "holy grail" of drums that you desire?
Now there's a cool question!
I never really thought of this, but deep down, I want a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute kit (or possibly an Oak Custom). I've also always loved Jeff Ocheltree's snare drums ever since the first three snare hits of "Ants Marching" by Dave Matthews Band.
