Strangest drum/cymbal? -- Uh, I dunno. My set of octobans? I'm really not that unconventional.
Would I own a gong if I could? -- I can't think of a "need" for a gong but for looks, maybe. But I'd definitely add flame jets ala Alex Van Halen.

Gong? After I build/purchased a set of Octobans, then absolutely. So many songs from both The Lovely Lost, and Remorial end with some epic sustain on everything, and while a good crash on my 22" China and ride do it some justice, a 26"+ gong would be awesome.
Then again, I could buy a complete second shellpack for the price.

Depending on the size of the gong you could buy a car for that price.

I don't think I would get a gong, even if I had the cash to spare. I don't have the room for one, either in my drum room or on the stages I play on. The drummers I've seen with a gong usually only use it during a solo. The one exception would be Roger Taylor who has that big gong hit at the end of Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm not really a solo kind of guy.

todays question.....Any food that you stay away from before a gig? I stay away from greasy food and I really eat after the gig.

I don't stay away from food, but I do stay away from beer; before and while playing. I drink water and gator aid, just to stay hydrated. If I have beer before playing I tend to be anxious for the set to end so I can go pee. After the evening is done, I'll switch and have a beer or two.

Just the opposite. I always eat about an hour before a gig, and have one drink with the meal as well.

I try not to eat right before a gig- if I do, it is usually some plain protein or something like an energy bar.
If I am singing back up, I may have a shot of 'Jager' just to open the pipes, but typically, no drinking on the gig for me.

Welcome back. How's the progress going, in getting things back in order after Sandy?

Thanks! As far as Sandy goes, I purchased new drums and some new percussion but am still waiting on the new drum room to be finished and some hardware to get here. I thought it sucked not having any drums, but now I think it may be worse having new drums and not being able to play them. ![]()
As for today's question, no, I don't stay away from any particular food before a gig. If I enjoy eating it, it's game.

Click "reply" on the post you want to quote. Then, below the subject line and to the right, you see a "spell check" and "quote" button.
RE: food, I don't drink caffiene or alcohol when I play. I've found that either makes my playing significantly worse.

Funny. To make it to a 11:00 or later gig, I better load up on caffeine or this old guy's falling asleep during the first break. What I eat doesn't matter too much. But I damn well better eat. I may have a beer during the show, some nights not until after.

I try to eat something not too heavy within 2 hours of showtime, and if I havent had much caffeine I will likely chug a NOS or Rockstar (sugar free to save on calories). During a show its water, tea, or diet coke for me.
If I follow that pattern I neither run out of steam after 2 hours, nor get the muscle twitches like if I dont eat.

I before and after the gig. I'm diabetic, and I play death metal, so I don't need to die during/after the gig.
