Well, I used a Pearl 8"x14" Brass FFS for 20+ years and I broke one of the tube lugs. Locally, it was gonna cost almost $200 to have new parts machined. I've been using a 5.5" Sonor snare for the last year or so. It wasn't bad, and it had good snap/crack to it and all of that, but what I was missing was the body - because I like to tune the snare to a medium tension, so I figured... eh, the 9" will probably have a similar sound as far as body goes. Because wooden shells tend to be darker and less reflective, I may buy another shell to go in it - since the head mounting generally is like an upside down FFS - and heavily coat the inside of that one with polyurethane if this one isn't as bright as what I am looking for. I think the rims and framework are cast iron.
Wow, my high school drum line used very similar snares. I never found marching snares particular loud until you put it into the rim.... but then again, I think we marched with 11x14"s? Hmmm... Well, let us know it sounds with your kit!
