I'll check my CMOS/BIOS settings today. When I had of those problems installing Win8 , I set the cmos to default settings, which, now that I think of if, include power saving settings. I also turned on MONITOR CPU TEMPERATURE. That may have also triggered a shutdown.

Scaring you? I was scaring myself !

Wow. Are you sure there's not some sort of international duty or something there? In state, they range from 7.5& to 9%, I believe, although some cities may tack on a bit more. 

Out of state collection of taxes on mail order sales has been sketchy and piecemeal,  but the state has tightened its grip on out of state retailers, introducing a "use" tax that, in effect, takes the place of the sales tax. California sales tax varies from jurisdiction within the state (the state fell prey to a property tax 'reform' that, while much-needed, was unfortunately written by big property holders for their own benefit -- they got voters to sign on with short term benefits but severe long term damage to the state and its ability to raise revenue -- and, of course, since sales taxes are regressive, hitting the poor and disenfranchised hardest and letting the wealthy off easy, it was relatively easy to get the sales tax jacked through the roof.

Well, California has about 3.5 million more people -- and, overall, much better Mexican restaurants -- than Canada, so I think we know who has claim to the hearts and minds...

I don't know Blue. All I know is that they charged me more than $7 for a $52 item and our sales tax, in Ontario here (Federal and Provincial combined) is 13%. I have never been charged tax on mail order items ....but they also charged me in Canadian money which screwed up my PAYPAL ????

Any way, now that I have calmed down a bit (running out of coffee) and the computer is faithfully churning out my video, I have decided to let this whole issue go because I don't need any unnecessary hypertension !

Well, that makes me feel better about the Cali sales tax.

Not at all sure how your tax got so high (unless it was, in part some sort of duty, anyhow). I do note that 7/52 is about 13.5%.

I sometimes get tweaked out over a few bucks... in the old days I'd get tweaked out over a few bucks and then go spend 20 or 30 forgetting my troubles. So, you know. = )

I'm not really worrying about that stuff anymore. The big thing now is finding out why this sytem keeps shutting down after 20 minutes unattended. I can't find the screensaver junk on win 8 or hibernation settings or hibernation settings in my POWER SAVING cmos. It will work fine as long as I am sitting here typing but as soon as I walk away for 1/2 hour or more I will either find in in hibernation or the fan will be running with no video. I'm downloading a new nVidea driver now.

9:42 pm eastern Feb 2 Nope. New video driver screwed it up completely. Can't even do system restore. The video card is fine though. I'm on the same computer with Linux now.

Ok .... a couple of updates.

1) I found out how to get rid of the windows.old file which loosed up 34 gb of space.

2) The shutdown problem was a major problem. It seems to have been a BIOS version. I reflashed my bios and the problem seems to be gone. At the ECS website they said to download the version best suited to fix your problem, but a few years ago I thought that the NEWEST version was the best. Well the newest version was for a 6 core Phenom and mine is only 4 core. The version before that was to address the "no wake up" problem, so I'm now using the older BIOS. XP seemed to keep the system up and running for some reason.

3) Contrary to popular belief,  Windows 8 DOES HAVE a WinXP SP3 compatibility mode. Yesterday it almost looked like I was going to get Cubase SX V1 working. The thing that messed this up was the SYNCROSOFT driver. When Win 8 was installing, it saw my Cubase dongle as a "smart card reader" and installed it as such. This may be the problem......but yes I know.....officially Cubase SX V1 will not run on Windows 8.

4) COOL EDIT 2000 seems to be working fine on Window s 8. Here again , I'm a registered user. I have heard of unregistered users having trouble to run the free version.

I hate finding my way around on this new UI but gradually it is becoming more familiar.

Win8 is great.  And so far, it has been a positive move for Dan (imo) as it brought to attention various hardware fixes needing attention (bios update etc).

The msfn forums (not related to microsoft) are great places to find out anything you want.. and anything you want to do.. with win8. 

Not to mention also for win7, vista, xp, win98, win95, and DOS DOS DOS DOS.  It's a cool place there... I've never had so much fun on my old win98se machines as I have after slapping on a SP3 update for win98se... so so cool.. and also slapping on KernalX so that I can run most ALL xp programs on win98 (I still have three or four win98 machines running for fun, nostalgia, and day-to-day use ((still))

Oh.. back to win8.... it's really cool .. especially for the dirt cheap upgrade price it was.

Well, I THOUGHT that I fixed the auto shutdown thing but, no. Windows 8 has a mind of its own and tried to even hibernate while I was rendering and posting right HERE ! All went black for a 1/2 second and then it snapped back. I'll check the CMOS settings again, which were reset when I changed the BIOS.

No, I'm no hero. I had to make the upgrade because my WinXp was getting corrupted and no longer would run my latest video software. $39.95 sounded doable to me so I jumped in.

"Windows 8 hybernate problems" shows lots of discussions with lots of solutions.... did you Google that to peruse the topics for a narrow-down?  There are the side topics too such as "'refresh my pc without affecting my file' .. whatever that means.

 I haven't experienced issues, so I'm not much help.

I think that I already experienced that 'refresh my pc without affecting my file' . When it shuts down and I reboot, it will just chug along in the middle of the rendering process like nothing ever happened , whether 39% or 79% into the rendered file. The rendered files seem to run fine with no hiccups.

I finally found the settings. Windows default setting was to shut down after 30 minutes. I now have it set to 3 hours which should cover most large rendering jobs without me feeling guilty about leaving the computer on while I sleep and display after 10 minutes.

For desktop computers, my historical procedure is to immediately disable any sleep/hibernate features during a fresh os install... sleep/hibernate is totally unacceptable on a desktop.... in my world that is.  Same with screen savers... are those even still around? 

If I can't remember to power my computers down manually.. I'm unworthy.  If I can't handle getting a cup of coffee in the morning while my computer farm boots up.. I'm unworthy twice.

If I were doing any overnight rendering of video... which I don't often do... I'd still not use hibernate/sleep.  Instead, I'd probably just wake up and go check the progress after four or so hours.. which is about when the Ambien wears off anyway.

And all of this time, I thought that Microsoft was trying to follow Apple's lead of offering $29.95 upgrade.

I was able to install and run Sonar 2.0 in Windows 8 ! It was some work. I first had to find the DirectX patch and then the 2 updates to V2.2. It seems to run fine for what I need. I'm going to rebuild one of my old songs completely with my C64 sounds and needed to to get to the MIDI. (and never had the foresight to save the files in *.MID format) The only problem , so far, is that it won't load the fonts for SCORE display. As a drummer, piano roll is fine for me, but for some of you that actually play melodic instruments it may be a pain.

I was also able to install a 5-6 year old version of Cubase LE which came with one of my old sound cards.

I was also able to re-install Studio One from a few years ago.

This Windows 8 is turning out to be better than I expected.

It seems that the REGISTRATION and  elaborate COPY PROTECTION schemes are the breaking factor for old software running on Windows 8. First I couldn't get my old Cubase SX1 dongle to work and now I have this beautiful boxed set that Bitheadz sent me that won't accept the registration "response key".

So as of now $400 (and counting) worth of my old software won't run on 8 .....(but I didn't burn my bridges)

Remember that I said that Sonar 2.2 notation fonts didn't work uder Win 8. Well Sonar 2.0 Notation fonts DO work even though ver 2.1 and ver 2.2 fonts don't work. So if I need to print out one of my songs for someone to play live, I'll need to revert back to 2.0.  This is how it works on Win 8 64 bit version.

So older program does things that the newer program won't on Windows 8 .GO FIGURE.

I just wanted to add that I needed to re-install Windows 8 at least 6 times since my last post. I have SWAPABLE drives in my system and I guess that the nice people at Microsoft are keeping tabs on my system. As soon as I change a hard drive ,remove one or add an extra one I'm informed (during the boot process) that there are errors on the hard drive and then Windows 8 goes into a 15 minute or so "repair" process. That was the first big problem...The "repairs" were not fixes but messing things up worse. I'm thinking that Microsoft has a copy of my config and is keeping a "checksum" of each of my drives and if I modify a partition with another OS that it sees an "error"?

The next thing that happend was that my daughter insisted on getting a faster video card, and so DAD had to do the same thing. "Oh you can't use that video card on your MOBO. It isn't even a serious Video Card" So I upgraded to a new Radeon and got the BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.....and re-install again.

The last straw was a few days ago....the same disk "repair" and couldn't reboot. So I coughed up another $70 for a new 1TB sata drive. This is working good now, and my boot partition is no longer on an old 80gb IDE drive. I'm going to try and leave this alone now and use another tower of mine for the "boot swap" The larger boot drive should not give me any problems though.

Each time I do the re-install I must re-authorize all of my software and the pain to get old Sonar and Cubase SX working....not to mention....How many times will Presonus, Ableton, NI allow me to re-authorize?

Time will tell.

Oh, man, I'm so sorry you're having all this trouble, Dan!

I post business news in my Facebook stream (yes, I don't get it, but I do post picttures of my cat every once in a while just to see if anyone's still there) and one of my old recording school friends jumped in with a fiery defense of Win 8 and a diatribe against what he at least had the restraint to avoid calling 'the haters.' (At least I think he did. He got pretty cranked up.) I pointed out I was a Windows guy from way back, love XP (in my way), had no interest in the other major commercial desktop OS, etc, but that, yeah, my own limited experiences with W8 were negative, that the experiences of a number of people in the audio recording scene had very negative reports, and, of course, it was selling like last weeks moldy pancakes.

(In my defense, that was not my phrase. I was actually very reserved and trying to calm him down. At least, in my memory.   But, you know, he was an old friend. It bothered me to see him so exercised [and I still haven't seen or heard from him since; maybe he nixed my 'friend' status -- I really don't pay much attention to who's 'my friend' and not or go out of my way to 'friend' folks, with the very rare exception of truly long, lost friends I stumble across.)

Anyhow, long story short, that's the only person I know in the real world with anything nice to say about W8.

I just hope they do learn their lesson. I'm afraid that, having observed the current board and leadership at MS, I'm not so sanguine that the old 'every-other-edition-sucks' saw will hold this time. It looks a lot like W9 (predicting we'll go from 'wait' to 'whine' in nicknames) will be a slightly retinkered W8, complete with idiotic single-tasking 'Metro' UI hiding what's left of familiar Win multitasking.

I don't think they got the message.

If it makes you feel any better, I've been having some issues keeping my beloved old XP running happily, myself.

I got a rootkit a while back, apparently. It appears to be finally cleaned up but my main machine has probably been tied up maybe 40 hours doing scans over the last 10 days or so. Even though I tried to do it mostly at night, there were a couple days when I was limping along on my Nexus 7 tablet and the funky rescue Gateway laptop I saved from the landfill by replacing most of the basic i/o (onboard sound, optical drive, WiFi, ethernet all died in less than two years for the previous owner) with USB add-ons. It's an utter piece of crap, but, unlike my tablet, it's got a keyboard and a mousepad (how a mousepad can beat a touch screen, I cannot figure for the life of me but it does... at least it doesn't leave my big splotchy finger smears on the [also] glossy screen. (I knew the computer biz was in trouble when the started flooding the retail channels with monitors and lappies with unusable, glossy screens. Only an idiot... [sigh]  Of course, you need a gloss screen for touch pads, seriously compromising the ONE thing tablets do pretty well: act as dumb entertainment.)

Anyhow, here's the nasty bit:

As bad as having a rootkit on XP is -- it almost sounds like it's STILL better than having a brand new machine with W8.
