I think it's less of an update and more of a "replacement". At least, that's what it always seems like to me when updating Pro Tools. Ableton Live is similar.
http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search .jsp?DocId=435551 I saw a notification that PT 10.1.1 Update is available for download. I go to it and it turns out that it is about 1.7G. Why is an update that large? A lot of it is undoubtedly those damn loops, but you're not given a choice. You're downloading Pro_Tools_10_1_1_Updater_75589.dmg (or the Windows equivalent) and that's it. I believe that may be larger than when I initially installed PT 10.

Apple is leading the charge on that. As far as I know, there are only two ways to get OSX Lion: buy a new mac or 1.25GB download from the App Store.
As far as I know, a lot of companies are moving away from physical discs wherever possible, probably to cut operating costs. Sucks, because much as I hate dealing with storage, physical space being at a premium at my tiny studio.....I like to have a disc available, right now, if I need it.
