The elevator looks fine to me. Bet the airline's claim of damage to it is insurance fraud. What is that garbage stuck in it?

Re: another guitar torn up

So much for the Gibson HSC protecting the guitar...this is why ATA-rated flight cases exist. If I were traveling a lot by air with a $10k ax, I would spend $400 for a flight case. Having only flown once with my guitar (Happy...it was Tulsa), and we flew ...United but they were probably sensitized at that point, and the plane wasn't full, so we took the guitars on board and they had their own seats...but they made the bassist check his bass...

Yea DM, The ATA flight case would have been the thing to have for that guitar or any guitar if it was getting much flight time.

The only time I've flown with a guitar was Tulsa also. I walked on with mine but they wanted to look inside/ at it before we boarded.

Re: another guitar torn up

Sorry, I misspoke, I remembered I flew another time on United with a guitar, in 1974, on a red-eye from NY to LA, and they made me check the guitar, even though the plane wasn't full!
The only thing that happened was the case's custom paint job got scratched. Still have the guitar (1962 Melody Maker d-c, 2 p-up) in the same case almost forty years later...

Re: another guitar torn up

I have carried an acoustic through several trips, including aruba, mexico and belize without an issue. The small commuter planes are the issue, no "suit bag" storage where you can stow a case. I have had to plane side check once but that wasnt an issue either.

Re: another guitar torn up

Interesting stuff. As I posted elsewhere on this forum, I'll be flying to Minnesota in a few weeks for some casino gigs and I need to take my guitar with me. Rather than gamble as to whether or not I'll be able to take it on the plane in a gig bag and store it in an overhead, I'm thinking of un bolting the neck and putting the neck and body in my carry on case, the putting them back together when I get to the gig. I could do the same thing for the trip home. I'm not too worried about damaging an expensive axe; every guitar I currently own cost me less than $100.

I am contemplating buying an Epiphone LP Junior I tried out at GC. Sounded pretty good and was only $129 (I know that's a bit over my usual price range, but I'm planning on liquidating some of my other guitars that I don't gig with).

Anybody have any thoughts on the Epi LP Junior?

Re: another guitar torn up

I would check it out to see whether it is "authentic" in term of intonation.  I think the original LP Jr. had limited ability to adjust intonation.  Hopefully these have a more modern system.

But, really, $129 is just way too much to spend on a guitar anyway!

[ Edited ]

the necks on the bolt on versions are crap...you get what you pay for.  I bought one years ago for display purposes for a trade show. Of all the cheap guitars I bought for that display, that was the worst. I salvaged everything I could, the the neck was, well...split in the back. I didn't have time to replace it when I got it, and since I didn't pay for it out of my pocket, no biggie. We sold the others off to employees (a Dean, some Squiers) below cost... I still have the body and hardware...and I keep telling myself I should get a neck from Stewmac or GFS...but so far, no. So, like anything else, check it thoroughly!

The original Gibson LP jr.s had a wrap-over 'smooth' stop tailpiece (I had a '59) and yeah, intonation was iffy...I also had the 'fixed intonation' stop tail on my Melody Maker, and wound up putting a Leo Quan Badass on it.

I have a Korean made bolt on LP Special II from the early 90's that plays like a dream and refuses to die....I finally put decent parts on it and and an '86 PJ Marx 412 pickup and I love it.

Re: another guitar torn up

Those LP Special IIs were done at Samick. Reasonably priced, and yeah, they played okay, just the electronics were second rate....intentionally. They were almost as good as the Ibanez post lawsuit bolt on LPs.
