A pretty big storm is supposed to hit the Pacific NW tonight. I live in wine country (Dundee Ore..about 25 miles south of Portland) and they are predicting 5" to 10" inches here in the Willamette Valley. Typically we do not get a lot of snow but I guess it's coming tonight. In this area when there is a lot of snow it is followed up by flooding in the low lying areas. It should be interesting to see what the morning brings.

We usually get enough snow here to make it a pain to drive, but not enough to shut anything down but schools. And not enough to snow me in! :mad:
I put my car in a ditch right before Christmas, and it's still in the shop. I was coming back from band practice, and the rain gradually turned to snow. I was just thinking, "Wow, it's starting to stick! I'd better slow down!", when the rear end swung around to the right, and I was hydroplaning out of control.
Luckily, there weren't any other cars around, and I slid off the left side of the road backwards, and stopped at the bottom of the ditch, sliding into an electric pole from the side.
Damn AAA tower wouldn't pull it out till the cops got a look at it.
I'd had three beers at practice. One guy hadn't shown up, and so we cut it short, so I was chugging a beer before I left. I stopped at a McGaggles and picked up some food. I ate the fries and drank some coke on the way, but was saving the sandwich for home.
First cop to arrive (after we called them) was a township cop, who thought he smelled alcohol on me. So he put me through a battery of tests which seemed to be designed to wear me down until I failed, but apparently I passed. Well, it turns out the jurisdiction was to the State Patrol, so I had to explain the whole thing over to the statey. I sat in the back of his patrol car while they dragged my car out - scraping the door across the electric pole. I wrote out the story of what happened and he asked some questions.
He eventually got out of the car and came around and opened my door and stuck a breathalyzer in my face and said, "Take a big breath and blow in here." I must have passed because he said nothing else about it. He did write me a ticket for Failure to Control, which cost me $127.
I haven't heard anything about any charges from the electric company, but I know it knocked out power to at least one house, though it didn't seem to hurt the pole.
Lots of lucky stuff, including the rental car coverage I have, but all in all not a fun experience. I've gotta move south.

Sounds like you got lucky on the breathalizer thing. I don't know what your laws are like there, but in Virginia 3 beers would have probably been over the limit. Glad you're OK.
Go and see Q. He'll hook you up with tires that have retractable spikes and running boards that drop down to become outriggers.
I don't think you'll need the heat seeking missiles though.

No, I was legitimately under the limit, I'm sure. The three beers were over a three plus hour period which ended about 45 minutes before the accident (I had opened the third one when the guys started talking about heading to the bar, so I drank it down so they could go - I have too long of a drive to go to the bar first).
By the time the first cop was drilling me, it had been well over an hour since I stopped drinking, and I had eaten a large order of fries and drunk a significant amount of coke. The limit in Ohio now is .08, which about as strict as they come (it was .10 forever until MADD twisted congress' arm to round up more hardened criminals). By the time the 2nd cop gave me the breathalyzer, it had been at least two hours since I drank anything.
Is it possible I was over .08 when I left practice? Maybe, but I do go about 210 lbs. these days, so I don't know.
Also, the cops from this particular township are known to be pricks. I think the only reason the state patrolman tested me was because this cop told him he thought he smelled alcohol (he didn't mention french fries). I was perfectly coherent, and I walked the white line on the edge of the road fine though it was slick and leaning toward the ditch. Then he wanted me to hold my head still while he moved a pen around with me following it with my eyes. He did that for about five minutes I think. He didn't bother telling me to try to touch my nose with my eyes closed, as he could probably tell that was a slam dunk. Then he wanted me to hold one foot in the air for 30 seconds. I was fine through all of it.
I'm more sensitive to going on the road now after any drinking though, especially with snow and ice on the roads. I wasn't in any hurry that night, but I should have been going a little slower, and responded quicker to the changing conditions. I'm very careful now!

Suprisingly, I've never crashed my car in slippery conditions, though I've definitely had a curb or two stop me when my brakes wouldn't (mechanic says the alignment's still OK!), and I've done some Nancy Kerrigan-style twirls through intersections
In blizzard conditions, it's like a skating rink of cars sliding and spinning on down the road...something we've gotten used to, I guess
