My side of the Butch Snyder story..

Hi all,
I am the Jeff Miller that is the original artist of the "Tele-Spankin" song (which was really called "Rush Hour"). I recorded that back in 1999. Anyways, I wanted to just post my side of what happened and how this all came about from beginning to end. I wasn't going to bother with it, but I believe everyone needs to know the whole story here. I want to also mention that everything I'm about to type it 100% truth as it has unfolded on my side. It is not my intention to make things any worse for Butch than they already are or blow this out of proportion in any way, but I feel that it is necessary for everyone to hear both sides of this.

This all began @ the Guitar Diner forum. Someone posted a link in the Guitar Diner forum of a sound clip I did for FatSound Guitars back in 2002. The clip was of my old song "Rush Hour" but with new solos I re-cut using my new Dr. Z Maz 18. This clip has been on the FatSound Guitars web site for over a year now. After the link was posted in the GD forum, a Les Paul Forum member replied to the thread stating that the song on the FatSound Guitars site was a rip-off of a song that a Butch Snyder had recorded called "Tele-Spankin". He mentioned the song was posted quite a while back on the LPF. After this happened, the person that posted the link from FatSound's site emailed Stu Carter (owner of FatSound Guitars) and notified him of the possibility that I ripped off Butch Snyder's song and there was even a chance the clip wasn't of a Dr. Z Maz 18 amp at all.

This is where I get involved... Stu Carter contacted me and wanted to know if I knew a person by the name of Butch Snyder. I told him I didn't know of Butch at all. I asked him why he wanted to know. Stu informed me a person by the name of Butch Snyder had emailed him and said the clip that was on FatSound
Guitar's web site was not of me (Jeff Miller), but was of him and the amp wasn't even a Maz 18 but was really a Peavey Classic 50! Butch even went as far as sending a second email to FatSound Guitars stating he wanted to contact this Jeff Miller guy to find out what the problem was. As you can imagine, I
am totally shocked by this information.

I believe at this point Butch is thinking the song on FatSound's site was the same exact 1999 version of the song he has been using and didn't know I had re-cut the solos with the Maz before FatSound Guitars posted it.

After Butch sent FatSound Guitars the first email stating I had ripped him off, they pulled my song off of their website for fear that they were misrepresenting an amplifier. I had to then prove to them that the song I recorded was in fact me and the amp was really the Maz 18. This really stressed me out and I lost plenty of sleep over it to say the least. FatSound Guitars also instructed Butch to go to my web site and double-check the song in question to be sure it was actually his Tele-Spankin song I had listed there. This is where Butch finds out about me. Butch vists my web site and finds out that I am in fact the guy that played the sound clip on FatSound's site because the song is different than his version. He also finds out I'm the guy playing his Tele-Spankin tune.

At this time I also began my own search to find out what has been going on in the forums regarding my song. I was saddened to find that my song was being misrepresented across at least three different forums (SD, LPF & HC) and had possibly even been submitted for a Seymour Duncan compilation CD. I began to turn up the heat on Mr. Snyder at this point. I posted in some of the forum threads that my song appeared in and it didn't take too long to all shake out.

Butch contacted me and told me that his ex-bandmate/webmaster had put his name on my song and that he didn't listen to his own MP3's and it was all purely a mistake. I knew that story probably wasn't correct because it just didn't
match all of his replies in all of the forums over the past year or so. I believed he had listened to the MP3 and that he had done this intentionally. I basically demanded that he set the record straight with 100% truth in all of the forums that my song was being misrepresented in. He has now done so, or at least pretty close.

I hope you all understand my side of the story and why I felt compelled to take action on this. Can you imagine how you would feel if you were to put in a Seymour Duncan comilation CD in your stereo and hear a song that was yours but labeled as being performed by someone else? I am not a paid professional
player and I have worked hard all my life to try and get somewhere in this music business. And then this happens...

Butch has put me through a lot of trouble in doing such a thing. I'm glad he has tried to correct it. I will now try my best to forgive his actions and go on with my life.

Thanks very much everyone, and take care!

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

Thanks, Jeff, for giving us a better picture of what happened. I can see some of this in Butch's post, but I think now we can see some of the actual trouble this caused.

Somehow I'm reminded of the Pete Rose story unfolding now, except Butch has said he's sorry, and I think he feels that way.

But it seems to me he could have saved you a lot of trouble by backing off as soon as he thought the matter had come to the composer's attention. He didn't want to face up to it, and it looks like he fantasized that someone else was trying to steal the recording because he pulled up the wrong website. At least that's what he says. Who knows now if that's the whole extent of it. If I read Jeff's post aright, there's still some spinning going on in Butch's mind.

I don't really want to pile on the guy, but there's this:
"This is where I get involved... Stu Carter contacted me and wanted to know if I knew a person by the name of Butch Snyder. I told him I didn't know of Butch at all. I asked him why he wanted to know. Stu informed me a person by the name of Butch Snyder had emailed him and said the clip that was on FatSound

Butch even went as far as sending a second email to FatSound Guitars stating he wanted to contact this Jeff Miller guy to find out what the problem was. As you can imagine, I
am totally shocked by this information. " - Jeff Miller

Butch seems to be actively trying to brazen it out in the hope that his opposition is as phony as he is (I guess). I can just imagine how I would feel having my credibility destroyed for a year or more because somebody thought he could get away with stealing one of my songs because he chose to believe I could not possibly have written it.

This speaks to getting your stuff copyrighted, your good recordings, with the SR. I wonder how much more trouble this would have been for Jeff if he hadn't modified the original recording? Would there still be a debate as to authorship?

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

If I were Butch, I'd move, change my name and never post on a music board again.

I just wonder who else he has decieved, not just on these boards but in his personal life as well.

Unfreakinbelievable.

In case you missed it, here's the link to Jeff Miller's site, where he has a lot of clips up, but not "Rush Hour." However, just listen to "Six String Pileup" and you'll see what the fuss about Jeff's playing is, if you haven't already!

Howdy!
I have re-posted "Rush Hour" back up on my site now. If you go to my audio clips page, you'll see it listed as "Rush Hour (old version of Six String Pileup)".

Thanks so much for the interest!

Take care,
Jeff

That's fantastic, Jeff! I recognized "Six String Pileup," and picked it on purpose, not wanting to get into speculations, etc., and it's so cool that you just popped up and explained it!
Glad to see you're not only on top of it all, but have your attitude intact after all this! Great tunage, man! :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks again and I sure appreciate your support! I've finally gotten everything cleared up with this song theft ordeal I'm pretty sure.

The old 1999 version of Rush Hour was recorded with a stock Fender B-bender Tele through either my POD or my Egnater (I forget which one it was) but I'm thinking it was my Egnater.

The new version which is now called Six String Pileup was recorded with a Warmoth Tele I put together and the amp was a Dr. Z Maz 18 212 I bought over @ Fat Sound Guitars.

The reason for the two different names is because I never really intended for the old version of Rush Hour to get out (much less be renamed by someone else), but somehow it did. I renamed the new version to "Six String Pileup" before I posted on my web site. I liked the new name better and I thought it suited my playing LOL....

Anyways, now that I found out that the old version has been out on the net for over a year, I figured I'd be a good idea to put it up on my site so I can at least try to make it known who really did it. I guess the artist and song name has been mislabeled to players ranging from Butch Snyder to Brent Mason. I have since talked with Brent and I know he didn't put his name on it.:smileytongue: Since he's God on the Tele, I don't think he'd need to do that anyways.:smileyvery-happy:

The other party however did intentionally put their name on it thinking it was probably a song by Brent and not knowing it was really me. What a mess this has been... hehe...

Oh well, sometimes you gotta laugh and move on. It's strange how things like this can happen. I'm just glad I finally caught it.

Take care,
Jeff

Hey, when I heard "Six String Pileup," I thought "the Phoenix Rises!" Perfect way of rolling with the punches and coming out ahead, Jeff!

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

Jeff, that's definitely some fine work. What are you doing lately? I saw some old magazine articles on your site, looking like you were drawing some attention.

Someone said earlier in this thread you should quit your day job, pack up and move to Nashville. That might not be a bad idea, since you sound like you could be a session guy, if nothing else. Depends on what you want to do though.

Hi!

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like what I'm doing.:smileyhappy: Right now I'm just trying to finish my CD. I don't have much else going on other than that at the moment. Yeah, I thought I was really going places when I appreared in Guitar Player and Guitar World, but nothing ever came of it. I got a lot of mail from around the world (which I enjoyed), but nothing else.

It would be fun to move to Nashville and give sessions a try, but there are so many great players there (and everywhere) the chances of making anything of it are probably slim at best. I'm trying to get on a somewhat pro level, but I don't really have to do sessions to be happy. I wouldn't mind doing a tour or something. I'm open to anything! Well... Almost anything LOL!

Thanks again!

Take care,
Jeff

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

Jeff, that's a pretty diverse schedule you have there. I really don't get much chance to see local acts anymore, not even at Blue Note (they always booked less than impressive bands) which is just around the corner from me.

Fairfield has an amphitheatre? I would have never guessed. Good luck with the summer gigs.
