Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

Butch , you could be Faith Hills band , imagine that
Who would you say are your influences?
There was a guy I remember seeing , reminded me of you.
He used 2 Webb amps , ( the kind that steel players use) , he was always using the volume pedal. He had the steel bends combined with the chicken picken just like you.

Is the b bender an essential ingredient to your sound, steel type bends?
Also the compressor must be important .
Awesome playing!
Best of luck .

theManfromAlabam: Yeah, that was my Classic 50/410. I'm selling it though because I would rather have 2 12" speakers.

Thanks for the compliments! Albert Lee is the man who first drew me to the Telecaster and that style of playing. I would also have to site Danny Gatton, Brent Mason, Larry Carlton, and Jerry Donahue as influences as well.

Yes, I use the B-bender quite a bit. I have a Marshall ED-1 compressor that is never turned off.

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

Butch-- ever heard of a guy by the name of Keith Urban? Tele Spankin' reminds me of a song of his called Rollercoaster... Great country playing.

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

I know of Keith Urban. He gets some pretty good tones with his EMG's. I never have heard "Rollercoaster". I'll have to check it out.

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

Hi everyone,
My name is Jeff Miller. I am a guitarist from the Cincy area. I have never posted in this forum before, but certain matters have been brought to my attention and I have been forced to take appropriate action.

Could someone here please verify for me that the song listed below is the same song that was listed earlier in this thread as the song "Tele-Spankin" by a Mr. Butch Snyder?

Thanks so much!

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

Jeff and all here,

This has come to my attention a little too late because I don't listen to my own MP3's. I pulled the "Tele-Spankin" link about a year ago after I found that it was not me playing. I repeat, it is not my song nor is it me playing it. It is Jeff Miller. I didn't realize this until someone sent me a copy of it at my own request. A former bandmate had some MP3's of mine that were about average. I sent him the one I called "Tele-Spankin", which is a very average tune. This person took Jeff's tune and renamed it to be mine. He then posted it on an FTP site and sent me the link so I could post it. I did and everyone went crazy. I received e-mails over the foloowing weeks about it. I thought, "Well, it's really not that great." Then someone sent me a copy of it. I listened and was very surprised to find that it in fact was not my song. It was very good; but not me...

I pulled the link and had the file deleted. I had hoped that would be the end of it. Well, apparently it isn't. Jeff, I honestly did not take your song and misrepresent myself. I pulled the link.

I want to offer a public apology for this to Jeff and everybody else who thought that the song was indeed me. I know this is very embarassing for Jeff. It's very embarassing for me as well. I hope everyone, especialy Jeff can accept my apology for this matter.

***Totally Coming Clean***

I'll just bear all right now and be totally honest with you all...

When the guys at the Seymour Duncan Forum decide to do a forum member CD, they requested songs from me. I didn't have anything; nor did I ever have a way to record anything. I thought long and hard about it. They really were bugging me for something to put on the CD. I couldn't give them anything. The CD came out without me on it. The CD received rave reviews from all the forum members. I was very disappointed and felt very dejected. I was surfing around Audio galaxy; back when you could get files from them for free. I came upon your tune. It was labeled as "Brent Mason". It had absolutely no labeling on it whatsoever that indicated it was Jeff Miller. I listened to it and thought, "This is pretty good." I thought it was Brent Mason from some Nashville clip or something. I had no idea any player of this caliber existed in the Cincy area. If I had, I would have done what I could to meet and learn from this truly great player. I just thought it was Brent Mason. I sent the MP3 in and deemed it as my own. I wanted to show everyone on the Duncan forum that I could indeed play. I even gave a gear list. I do actually use that particular equipment. I thought only a couple of people listened to it. I really had no idea that it would be all over the Internet. After I had received all kinds of e-mails about how great it was, I got caught up in the hoopla; knowing fully that it wasn't me and that I needed to pull the link and come clean. I honestly didn't mean to cause any trouble. I also didn't mean to hurt you at all. When someone came forward and said it was "Jeff Miller", I did a Google search for that name. This is all I came up with.

http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Jeff_Miller_Band/

If you listen to this guy's clips, you'll find that he's basically a folk guitarist who is very far from your style. That's who I thought "Jeff Miller" was. I honestly thought that he was trying to lay claim to Jeff Miller's song. I had finally had enough. I felt really stupid and very badly for having done this. I came to a realization. I am a professional engineer. I am a decent Telecaster picker. I have won several contests. I have a beautiful, loving wife and three fantastic children. Why did I do this!?! I kick myself everyday for my deceit of all who thought it was me. I am not a bad person. I made a really awful mistake that I could not stop fast enough.

I don't know what else to say.... I can't say I'm sorry enough. I just want to play music and do so by my own merits. In coming totally clean about this, I am humbly asking your forgiveness for my mistake...Please....

Regards,

Butch Snyder

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

I hope this is enlightening for anyone else who might be tempted to get some internet cred using someone else's recording.

I can imagine how this must weigh on Butch, but my sympathy is mitigated by the fact that it was entirely self-inflicted, and he only came clean when pretty much backed into a corner (I had questions about the chronology of the whole thing based on his previous explanations). Still, it's a good thing to finally tell the truth and try to put it behind you.

Hopefully, the real artist will benefit from whatever exposure this has generated. Jeff Miller, are you the Jeff Miller who did the recording? (Assuming you've been able to hear it - I haven't even heard it and don't know if any of the links are working - I'm at work.)

If the links aren't up, someone should put one up, giving credit to the real player. Sounds like it would be worth hearing.

So now we can give credit where it's due...

Jeff, excellent playing! I've had this clip on my computer for over a year and I go back to it once in a while for listening enjoyment.
You've got that same over-the-top attitude in your playing as Brad Paisley.

Butch, you're a good guy for coming clean with this. The question now is; what do YOU sound like?

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

Unfortuantely, I see it took Jeff Miller a year to track down this posting...by the way, TZA, the link is active... I pulled this down last nigth (actually around 2AM...damned insomnia!)...it took about 9 minutes to load on my dial up, your mileage may vary...

but this is some absolutely impressive chicken pickin'!!!!

 this kind of reminded me of being blown away at the Anaheim NAMM show in 1995 when Albert Lee was demoing for MusicMan (when his sig ax came out)...two doors down from the booth I was demoing at...got to listen and watch him picking all day...

Jeff Miller, who ever you are...time to quit the day job and head for Nashville...:smileyvery-happy:

As For Butch Snyder...interestin that your initials equate to your activities, and sad to think that you allowed this fallacious charade to be perpetuated for a year, and you did not come clean until somehow Jeff traced you here. For Shame...plagiarism is the ultimate artistic crime...

Re: Tele spankin' anyone?

From the articles I saw on his website, it looks like Jeff has gotten some attention for his work, though the Guitar Player (I think) articles were from the early nineties. Looked like he was on the verge of something back then.

DM, who were you demoing for?

A well known speaker manufacturer whom I left on rather negative terms, so I will not say who they are except that they have been around quite a while...they were building a line of guitar cabs under Dan Armstrong's name. I met Dan at the factory one day when I was on a break ( I was actually the materiel supervisor, but they let me in the cabinet/amp test room because I was an axeslinger) and he insisted I A/B his cab against my '64 Vibrolux..well his cabs didn't quite compare (The Stones were endorsing them on their tour at the time, and I had the displeasure of dealing with all the problems they had in Japan...), but he got the owners to put me in the booth with another player, we alternated...so I had plenty of time to wander over and check out the other guys...and Albert was definitely the ear catching player of the day...among dozens of great players.

Sadly, Dan came to one of our rehearsals (our bassist at the time owned an Armstrong Bass Serial # 002!) about a year ago and he was not faring well...but we had a nice talk about the old days...we were both from the same area in New York as well...
