The middle ground has all of the elements. The extremes are limited by their very nature. Revel in the abundance, avoid unpainted corners - they killed Kurt Cobain (I kid, I kid).
I agree that dwelling in the extremes is hazardous. It seems necessary, though, that there be the occasional foray toward the edges in order to truly appreciate your center in the middle ground. I suppose it has a lot to do with where you draw those lines. YMMV.
