Re: I will never shop at Daddy's Music Again

I admit I'm cheap. That's why I buy my strings by the case, or 5 packs in the lil' D'Adarrio tin if they are on sale.

Oh wait...he can't read what I'm posting, can he?

The music shops (Back when I was gigging) used to give discounts to gigging musicians :smileyhappy:

You just had to chat them up a bit.
Tell them what band you were with, where you were playing etc.

They'd knock a buck or so off that set of strings you had to buy instead of eating that day :thu:

Re: I will never shop at Daddy's Music Again

I usually approach it by asking what they can do on package - like if the asking price of the amp (say $500) plus the asking price of the cabinet (say $300) total $800, I'll ask "What's the best you can do on both of them together." Tends to get the wheels turning. Then he'll reply...."well, I guess I could let the amp go for $425, and the cabinet for $250." And I'll try "How about just the amp for $425." Which is all I really wanted to buy in the first place. Usually works.

Re: I will never shop at Daddy's Music Again

A store that marks all their shit at retail and makes people beg like dogs for a piddly discount is pretty pathetic.

I buy my strings online because even after shipping they cost half the price of brick and mortar store strings. Yes I realize it's a volume thing but hey, I'm the end consumer and the day a local store can get me half a dozen packs of the strings I want for under 25 or 30 bucks after tax, without having to shmooze, beg, or jump through flaming poo covered hoops is the day I buy from them instead of online.

Re: I will never shop at Daddy's Music Again

I hate that store...I bought 2 guitars there and each were lemons. And they have no inventory. You ask for something like a boss EQ and they try to sell you a demo at the new price. They give the excuse that they don't keep a big inventory. Never again....

Re: I will never shop at Daddy's Music Again

The people I do business with will match any online price, so long as it is not below their costs. I got the Blueridge for &250 less than were asking, thanks to a link posted by kwack. The guy that used to manage the store always cut local gigging musicians some slack. Haven't dealt with the new guy, so I;m unsure if he adheres to the same policy. If he doesn't, he should. It is good for business to keep the locals happy.

There isn't any of the big box type stores near me. The store I frequent is a chain, but only with a half a dozen or so stores, in several nearby towns.

Re: I will never shop at Daddy's Music Again

Retail stores don't owe you anything besides the marked price. That's the way it is. It doesn't matter how much their markup or profit is. If you don't want to pay that, don't buy it there. I get a decent discount from my local store, more than most guys get, because I've bought stuff from them consisitently since I was in high school, which is a damn long time. Discounts are a reward for customer loyalty, and may even be given as an inducement to get a large sale, but they are not an entitlement.

When I was a trim carpenter, I occaisionally had guys wait until I got all set up ready to start work, and then ask me to drop my price a nickel a foot. The thing is, I might have anyway had they not asked, but since they did, my answer was always no.

As much as I hate that store they do match Musicians Friend on just about everything (at least the store in Dartmouth, MA does). Too bad it is often junk. Don't know if their warehouse does a lousy job at handling items.

I go into Daddy's looking to buy a new tuner and a strap and couple sets of strings. I also inquire about servicing that GK amp I just got (has a hum). I tell the guy that it's my first time in his store and I usually shop at 2 other stores. Both of which are only 5 min away from his store. He spends time telling me how much better shopping with him is than them.

I go to check out and my total is about $70, I say to him how about cutting me a small discount on the price (5%) he looks at me like I'am crazy and says NO! He then tells me if I want to buy a $20 discount card then he can give me 5% off on some of the iteams.

I have shopped at many different music stores both big box and private onership and this is the first time they didn't knock off at least 5% to make the customer happy. I mean that's how a music store works.

I told him to keep his strap and all but one set of strings. (I didn't have time to go anywhere else or I would have not bought anything) End result I spent $30 and he gained a smaller sale with no discount, but lost me ever going into his store (or any Daddy's) ever again.

Sounds to me like you walked in the store...told them that your new and mentioned the OTHER two stores that you shop at near by as some kind of leverage. That reaks of "pitch".

Daddy's is THE PLACE to buy USED gear. They are just about the cheapest place around. That and they have a NO HASSLE return policey.

Not shopping there hurts YOU not them.

Not to argue, but in fact the small stuff is where they have the largest gross margin. If any product can be price played it's the accessories. So to give a small discount is no big deal, and they do it in hopes that you will then shop there to buy your bigger ticket needs.

Not when I worked at Sam Ash it wasn't. There's very little, if any, room to move on the small stuff.

Well I should have qualified that with the fact that he first asked me if I had shopped there before. I didn't just out of the blue bring it up.

Re: I will never shop at Daddy's Music Again

A local GC really hated seeing me walk in, cuz' I went through a dozen pedals in a month to find what I was looking for, taking advantage of their return policy. When I finally found the right pedal, I bought the same thing used on ebay for half the price. lol.

Re: I will never shop at Daddy's Music Again

Before ProSound closed their SE Denver location I was in there about every week snoopin around the guits and stuff since they were like 1/2 mile from the house. Knew all the sales people by name and hung out with the service guys talkin shop and pryin ideas and stuff out of 'em. I didn't make many purchases, but when I did I always got a "little something" off since they knew me. :thu:

Now the closest shop is GC on Co. Blvd.

I hate that place.

Your thirties, you raise your family, you make a little money and you think to yourself, "What happened to my twenties?" Your forties, you grow a little pot belly you grow another chin. The music starts to get too loud and one of your old girlfriends from high school becomes a grandmother. Your fifties you have a minor surgery. You'll call it a procedure, but it's a surgery. Your sixties you have a major surgery, the music is still loud but it doesn't matter because you can't hear it anyway.
